The Sputnik launch in 1957 prompted the Woods Hole Conference, led by Jerome Bruner, advocating "Sooner is Better" in math education. This clashed with Piaget's ideas, leading to the 1960s New Math movement. By the 1980s, a shift towards being fluent math theorists emerged challenging the notion of just knowing math, culminating in a return to Basic math principles.
