  2. Merry Christmas Christmas is one of Canada’s most important holidays and is celebrated on December 25. Many Christmas attend church services And sing carols that retell the story of Christ’s birth(基督). Christmas images include a star, angels singing, shepherds in the field, the baby Jesus in the manger, his mother Mary and the three Wise Men offering, gifts. Many churches have candlelight midnight services. In Quebec, Catholic families enjoy reveille-a traditional meal eaten after the midnight service or mass. They eat a chocolate cake in the shape of a log. It represents the Yule log that people used to burn on Christmas Eve for warmth and light. many people celebrate Christmas in a secular way. Even if they aren't’t religious, Christmas is a time to spend with family and friends. People often travel long distances to be together.

  3. Most of the non-religious traditions that are part of Christmas in North America started in other countries. The Celts in ancient England brought holly and mistletoe into their homes. Holly and mistletoe were symbols of luck and fertility because they stayed green even in the winter. People still hang mistletoe in doorways, kissing when they meet under it. The poinsettia has large red, pink or white leaves. Some people call it the flower of the Holy Night. Many Canadians decorate their houses with poinsettias, or give them to friends or neighbors. The evergreen tree was a symbol of eternal life for ancient Egyptians and Chinese. Many Canadian homes have an evergreen Christmas tree with lights and ornaments. The custom of putting Decorations on a cut evergreen tree originated in Germany. It became popular in the mid-19th century. Germany’s Prince Albert was married to England’s Queen Victoria. He brought a Christmas tree into her royal palace. Soon, this tradition became popular in England, then in Canada.

  4. Many Canadian families and friends exchange Christmas cards. The first Christmas card was designed in England in 1843. It had a picture of a family party with the words: “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You.” By the end of the 19th century, the custom became popular in Canada. For Canadian youngsters, Christmas wouldn't’t be Christmas. without Santa Claus. Children believe that Santa and his elves live at the North Pole. They spend most of the year making toys. On Christmas Eve, Santa packs up a sack full of toys and hitches his reindeer to his sleigh. Then he flies around the world delivering gifts to good children by sliding down their chimneys and filling their Stockings with presents. The tradition of Santa Claus began in 4th Century Turkey. A Christmas bishop named Nicholas was kind to children. He later became Saint Nicholas. In the years following his death, People remembered him by filling children’s shoes with toys and sweets on December 6. This practice spread across Europe. The Dutch changed his name to Sinter Klass. They brought the

  5. tradition to North America in the 17th century. Once there, children started calling him Santa Claus. Instead of filling shoes, Santa filled the stockings they’d hung by the fireplace. Many communities have Santa Claus parades in early December and parents encourage children to write a letter to Santa with their Christmas wishes. Food is another important tradition at Christmas. The Christmas Day feast includes a roasted turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and turnip-many foods that people eat at Thanksgiving Throughout the holiday season people eat fruitcake, special cookies like and shortbread, drink eggnog and in Quebec eat a meat pie called tourtiere. Although Christmas is supposed to be a time of goodwill, joy, giving and love, many people find it a very lonely time. Some people can’t celebrate Christmas with their families because they’re too far away. Other people don’t get along with their families and find Christmas stressful. Many Canadians complain that Christmas has become too commercial. They think that the decorations go up too
