  1. RESEARCH NOTES AND BIBLIOGRAPHYUtopian and DystopianNovels

  2. Keeping organized research notes is important for an effective, organized research paper

  3. How to Take Research Notes • Use index cards or a small separate notebook TIP: Cards are best!! • Write down all the bibliographical information (author’s name, publisher, date, place of publication) for each source you would like to use • Use a separate card for each source. This is called a source card • only bibliographic information goes on the source card

  4. How to Take Research Notes • Number all your source cards • Skim through each source for information on your topic • Write down the information you wish to use on a separate index card. This is called an information card • Write only one piece of information per card, using direct quote, paraphrase, summary etc. – anything that will help you remember the information

  5. On the information card, jot down the page number of the source where you got the information • Number each information card to correspond to the source card of the work it comes from so you can always refer back to that source later • Organize your information cards according to subject matter…

  6. For example if you are researching segregated schools, separate the cards about white schools from the cards about black schools, or cards about high schools from cards about elementary schools • Keep organized information cards and source cards in a case or bound with an elastic band or binder clip so you don’t lose them, or have to go back and re-organize • Paper clips don’t work well for this

  7. How do I make a Works Cited? • Works Cited lists follow strict rules for format and organization • Find out how to create a Works Cited in MLA 7 format by doing one of the following:

  8. Use the MLA Handbook For Writers of Research Papers (available in the library)

  9. Check your agenda for MLA format • Pick up a MLA handout from the circulation desk in the library • Borrow a copy of SourceIt from the circulation desk in the library – available for use in the library only • Use SourceIt online in the digital library (home page of Peel District School Board)

  10. Use EasyBib • EasyBibwill format and organize your Works Cited • Use full version of EasyBib by going to: http:/www.easybib.com Username: brampton@peel.com Password: citation EasyBib also will help you create and organize your notes as you research
