  1. Project BEST(Building Expert Science Teachers)

Overview • Project BEST is designed to provide teachers with hands-on, as well as, research based strategies that can be implemented into their classroom. • Project BEST participants are required to attend a minimum of 79 workshop hours throughout the grant year. • Project BEST currently has 27 teachers from grades 6-12. • STEM based experiments that are classroom friendly are one of the top priorities.

  3. Project BEST Goals 1. To create opportunities for enhanced and ongoing professional development of science/math teachers that improves the subject matter, knowledge, expertise, and leadership capabilities. a. To focus on effective classroom implementation (in support of Kentucky’s existing science content standards_ of the KSCA standards for literacy in science in grades 6-12. b. To focus on number and operations and algebraic thinking as embodied in the KSCA standards for mathematics (K-12), with an emphasis on their connection with mathematical practices.

  4. Project BEST Goals 2. To promote strong teaching skills for mathematics and/or science teachers and teacher educators. Including integrating reliable scientifically-based research methods and technology-based teaching methods into the curriculum.

  5. Project BEST Goals 3. To establish and operate on-going STEM institutes or professional learning communities for elementary, middle and secondary mathematics and/or science teacher a. Relate directly to the curriculum and academics areas in which the teacher provides instruction, and focus only secondary on pedagogy. b. Enhance the ability of the teacher to understand and use STEM/21st Century Leaning Skills; and train teachers to use curricula that are (1) based on scientific research; (2) aligned with Kentucky’s Core Academic Standards; and (3) project-based, experiment-oriented, and concept and content base (CHETL)

Past Workshops • 2- 30 hour workshops with EKU to implement inquiry based labs, covering physics, light, magnetism, biology, genetics and change over time. • 18 hours Robotics workshop- Georgetown College • 12 hours- Ken Mattingly- Assessment • 6 hours- Hallie Booth- Deconstruction of Standards and Literacy in Science • 6 hours- Amy James- Literacy in Science • 6 hours- Richard Delong- NGSS • 6 hours- Katrina Sloan-NGSS • 6 hours- Rigor and CHETL • 12 hours of unit development to implement new strategies

Successes • Project BEST did increase in number from 17 participants to 27 participants for year two. • Participants, as well as, myself are becoming more comfortable with the new NGSS standards. • Literacy in science is becoming more user friendly for participates. • Each teacher has a new Lab Quest 2 and probes available for use in there classroom. • Deconstruction of standards is not such a daunting task and participants are feeling more comfortable with deconstructions. • Teachers are getting inquiry based experiments for their classroom that implement science, math and literacy.

  10. Challenges • The greatest challenge is motivating participants to get the required hours for the grant. Teacher time out of the classroom is always in short supply. Year two has had more success with this issue than year one. • Getting administrators to participate in the grant has been a challenge for both years of the grant. The grant strives to have administrators participate but most administrators are very limited in the time they can be out of their building. • We are starting some online sessions to eliminate travel expense and to allow some work to be completed afterschool, the challenge is getting some participants to take advantage of the opportunities and get away from the face to face meetings.
