  2. Introduction • The natural environment of an organism; place that is natural for the life and growth of an organism. • The place where a person or thing is usually found. A special environment for living in over an extended period • Within each ecosystem, there are habitats which may also vary in size. • A habitat is the place where a population lives. A population is a group of living organisms of the same kind living in the same place at the same time. All of the populations interact and form a community. The community of living things interacts with the non-living world around it to form the ecosystem. • The habitat must supply the needs of organisms, such as food, water, temperature, oxygen, and minerals. If the population's needs are not met, it will move to a better habitat. Click picture for video review-

Vocabulary • Habitat • Natural environment of an organism; place that is natural for the life and growth of an organism • Species • identification, naming, and classification of living things according to apparent common characteristics. • Interdependent • Depend on each other. • Decomposer • An organism that feeds on and breaks down dead plant or animal matter, thus making organic nutrients available to the ecosystem. • Consumer • Organism that consumes (eats) other organisms or organic matter in a food chain. • Producer • An organism, such as a plant, that is able to produce its own food from inorganic substances.

  4. Conceptual Activity • What are some common habitats? • Samples: • Design a 3 column chart: on one side list 10 animals. On the other write what habitat they live in. • Challenge: What about each habitat do these animals need to survive? Interactive • Read the information on http://www.nationalgeographic.com/geographyaction/habitats/index.html • Dividing into groups, research one of the following and do the Online Activities on the above site for your chosen habitat: • City & Suburb • Desert & Tundra • Forest • Fresh Water • Ocean • Prairie • Other habitats can be used if desired. • See next slide for instructions~

Interactive continued Even more information can be found at: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/biomes/ • Using encyclopedias and the Internet, locate where these habitats can be found in the world. • Mark these areas on a world map. • What about that habitat supports life, and what life forms (types of plants and animals) use that habitat the most? Each group will report their findings to teach the class.

  7. Critical Thinking • As a whole group, discuss what would happen if a particular habitat was no longer available. • How would the lack of this environment affect our world balance? (Example: without rainforests would we be able to produce enough oxygen for humans to live?) • How could we avoid this situation? • What could we do to prepare for this need?
