  2. WHY? • Because We OUGHT TO Student Success Is the Right Thing To Do • 40% of undergraduates receive Pell awards • 70% get some financial aid that includes loans • Average Indebtedness of Graduates is ~$25,000+

  3. Because We Have To Student Success impacts the bottom line • UNC System Strategic Plan Metrics Nine metrics in all – performance is linked to funding • Graduation rate, first time in college @ 5 yrs • Low income enrollment and completions • Rural enrollment and completions • Undergraduate degree efficiency • Critical workforce degrees (STEM/Health/Educ.) • Research dollars • Funding Model Changes Under discussion, but movement towards outcomes rather than headcount

Student Success Initiatives • New Student Induction (Get ‘em in) Develop and implement an integrated set of experiences, messages, and processes designed to engage incoming students in the academic and cultural fabric of the institution. • The Graduation Initiative (Get ‘em out) Develop and evaluate processes and mitigate unnecessary barriers to ensure that students can graduate in a timely fashion

New Student Induction • Before Enrollment: • SOAR • New Student Convocation (20 August) • Week of Welcome • First Semester – 1st Year – 2nd Year) • Prospect for Success (QEP) – 1st Year Academic Engagement Curriculum • Expectations • Course Redesign • Early Alert (and Mid-Term Grades) • Transfers • 50% + of Undergraduate Students • From both Community College (w/ & w/o AA) and 4-year schools • More diverse, more needy

  6. Graduation Initiative • Unnecessary Barriers • Declaring the major • Course sequences (eg. Fall / Spring only) • Course availability • Graduation Metrics • Unit-level metrics for retention in years 1 and 2 and graduation of juniors • Basis for unit-level plans to identify metrics for strategic interventions • Advising • Building a University Advising “System” from professional and faculty advisors • iPASS – Advisors proactively intervene as evidence of academic risk emerges, building towards a coordinate care-network • Harnessing the power of advising systems: CONNECT, Degree Works
