Areas of Activity 1 ETSI ERM_TG31A:Communications LATEST UPDATE • Draft EN 302 065 for Technical Body approval • Draft EMC standard under preparation • Draft European Commision Decision under finalisation • Number of independent interference trials underway GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  4. Areas of Activity 2 ETSI ERM_TG31B:Vehicular Radar • Enhance traffic safety by UWB vehicular Short Range Radar (SRR) Globally supported by SARA *), the automotive vehicle radar industry group, • Status of Standardization: • EN 302 288, 24 GHz SRR; -published • EN 302 264, 79 GHz SRR -in work • European Commission and CEPT Frequency Decisions for 24 and 79 GHz -published *) SARA – Short range Automotive Radar frequency Allocation GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  5. Areas of Activity 3 ETSI ERM_TG31C: UWB Sensors • Enhance safety and work efficiency in public and private building, the construction and the medical environment areas • Status of Standardization • EN 302 435 Building Material Analysis; approved for PE*) • EN 302 500 Location Tracking-indoor; approved for PE*) • EN 302 501 Location Tracking-outdoor; in work • EN 302 498 Object Discriminat.& Charact. in work • EN 302 499 Object Identific.f. Surveillance in work • CEPT Frequency Decisions under development *) PE = Public Enquiry GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  6. Conclusion • ETSI proposes to modify the Resolution GSC-10/11 (GRSC) Global UWB Standardization to include UWB Radar and Sensor/Imaging Applications GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  7. ETSI UWB Radar and Sensors standardization Presented by Thomas Weber ETSI ERM TG31B GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  8. Parking aid Blind spotdetection Backup parking aid Precrash Stop & Go for ACC Rear crash collision warning Collision warning Lane change assist Blind spotdetection Collisionmitigation 24 GHz UWB Short Range Radar SRR for Surround Sensing – possible applications • Complete surround sensing with 8 sensors • Multiple applications with one kind of sensor GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  9. Radar sensors enable obstacle detection in most driving situations Available day and night Widely independent of weather conditions 24 GHz UWB Short Range Radar Why UWB Radar? Radar is a key enabling technology for innovative driver assistance systems and safety systems GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  10. Radar can address 88 % of all rear-end crashes Driver Inattention 68%  9%   9% 11% Alcohol Inattention andfollowing too closely Following too closely Source: NHTSA 24 GHz UWB Short Range Radar GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  11. 24 GHz UWB Short Range Radar Why UWB Radar? High resolution UWB SRR systems are capable of reliable object tracking, to predict the path of encountering obstacles This is vital to predict potential crashes Low resolution narrowband radar system are unreliable in tracking objects Predictability even deteriorateswith multiple objects in field of view. GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  12. 24 GHz UWB Short Range Radar ETSI - CEPT FCC Note: Time-limited placement on the market of 24 GHz SRRs in the EU member states until 30th June 2013. After this date only 79 GHz SRRs with a level of – 3dBm/MHz are to be placed on the market. GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  13. 24 GHz UWB Short Range Radar Global deployment of UWB SRRs US: Regulation in force since 2002 EU: Regulation in force since 2005 *) Russia: Discussion Japan / Far East: Discussion Canada: Inpreparation EU action: SRR integrated in eSafety program NZ: 24 GHz Regulation released Since cars are sold worldwide, a globally armonized frequency regulation is very important. SGP, Australia: 24 GHz in preparation *) the 24 GHz regulation is limited to 2013 GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  14. Overview – UWB Sensor Systems Building Material Analysis and Classification Object Discrimination and Characteriz. Object Identification for Surveillance Location Tracking GPR / WPR & Concrete Inspection Type 1 Type 1 Type 2 e.g. (in- door out - door) hazardous tools • Professional • Users TR 102 994-2 EN 302 066 TR102 495-6 EN 302 5xx TR 102 495-1 EN 302 435 TR 102 495-3 EN 302 500 TR 102 495-4 EN 302 501 TR 102 495-2 TR 102 495-5 EN 302 498 EN 302 499 GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  15. Application Examples Building material analysis and classificationEN 302 435 • Localization of hidden targets in constructions e.g. pipes, holes, wires for increased safety while e.g. drilling, construction testing • Characterization of material, e.g. metal or plastic or humidity • Sensors could be attached/integrated in Tooling equipment GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  16. Application Examples Location Tracking EN 302 500 • Localization of Object in a range gate • Tracking of target movements within the detection range • Sensor Tracking technology for mass market applications • Indoor tracking applications covered by FCC regulation and ECC UWB decision GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

  19. Application Examples Concrete Inspection Principle scenario for detecting and determining the position and depth of tendons and rebars in a bridge structure. The UWB handheld scanner is moved over a grid in order to image the buried tendons and rebars. The position is marked on the grid.
