Lariat Project: Bridging the Northern Tier with Regional Optical Networks

Join the discussion at the Internet2 Member Meeting on October 15, 2003, to explore the development of the Lariat Project, enhancing connectivity in the Northern Tier states. Learn about fiber routes, funding challenges, and the potential for federal grants in creating new networks. Discover how the Lariat Project aims to address the low-density population issue with upgraded bandwidth for biomedical applications.

  7. Resolving the Issue • Create new networks • Regional optical networks (RONs) • Low-density people often means low- density funding… • University money, state money are often in short supply • One possibility is federal grants

  8. Lariat • Aborning regional optical network • Six states participating initially • Bandwidth upgrades (as high as 10 Gb) • Funded by Grant from NCRR of NIH • Montana State = lead institution • Ron Johnson (UW/PNWGP) = co-PI • “First and foremost” for biomedical apps. • Seen as a pilot project • Initial six-month planning phase
