  3. Gypsy Roma people are originally from Northern India; they travelled to this country over 500 hundred years ago. As the Roma people had darker skin than the resident people in this country, they thought they had arrived from Egypt. They were then called “Egyptians”, as the years progressed they were later referred to as “Gypsies”.

  4. Irish Travellers are people who are traditionally a nomadic people of ethnic Irish origin.

  5. Scottish Travellers are also a nomadic people; in 2008 they were recognised in law as a separate ethnic group. Scottish Travellers tend to be made up of large family networks and can also include other nomadic groups.

  6. Showmen are people who set up and run fairground rides in different parts of the country. You may see funfairs at different times right across the local area.

  7. Circus Travellers - The circus is a tradition and has its own families that have been born into this tradition, similar to Showmen. Many families specialise in particular skills but also contribute to the whole performance by taking on a variety of roles.

  8. A refugee is a person who fears being persecuted, sometimes to the point of death. As a result of this fear they have to leave their home country and some arrive in our country seeking a safe place to stay.

  9. Asylum Seekers in the UK are people who are seeking a permanent stay and have lodged an application for protection on the basis of the Refugee Convention. “No one shall be subjected to torture or inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment”.

  10. Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month Competition • Each yearwe hold a competition, in 2011 we asked students to create a “coat of arms”. • The winners visited the Lord Mayor at the Town Hall. Bradford Together in Diversity
