  1. WHAT IS FAITH? Hebrews 11:1-6 - A FOUNDATION TALK - - DEFINING FAITH -

  2. _______________________________ FAITH IS VITAL Hebrews 11:6 ... without faith it is impossible to please him: for he who is coming to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him. _______________________________

  3. _________________________________ TWO ASPECTS OF FAITH A]THE BODY OF FAITH Jude 1:3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. _________________________________

  4. _________________________________ • B] - OUR SUBJECT MATTER - • PERSONAL FAITH • Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance* of things hoped for, ... ['υποστασις*] • The faith which is the UNDERGIRDER of things we are hoping for. Hebrews 11:1 ... the evidence* of things not seen. [ελεγχος*] • Faith is the CONVICER - that which convinces us - about things we are not seeing. _________________________________

  5. _____________________________________________________ People say: 'There is faith and there is belief.' 'FAITH' and 'BELIEF' are the same word in Greek 'FAITH' BELONGS TO A FAMILY OF WORDS 1) πιστις - [244] - NOUN [FEMININE] - faith, faithfulness, fidelity and belief (once in AV in 2.Thessalonians 2:13). 2) pisteuw - [248] - VERB - to believe, to trust [e.g. Hebrews 11:6 ] 3) pistoV - [67] - ADJECTIVE - faithful, trustworthy, sure, true, believing, believable, [a believer] 4) pistow - [1] - VERB - to be assured 5) oligopistoV - [5] - NOUN - of little faith Negatives: 6) apistew- [7] - VERB - disbelieve, distrust 7) apistia- [12] - NOUN - unbelief 8) apistoV- [23] - ADJECTIVE - disbelieving, faithless, incredulous _____________________________________________________

  6. ______________________________________________________ People say 'Either you believe or you don't believe.' FAITH IS NOT BEING GULLIBLE Hebrews 11: 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. INVESTIGATION COMMENDED - Acts 17:11 ... these (Bereans) were more noble than those of Thessalonica, in that they ... searched the Scriptures daily to see if those things were so. FAITH IS NOT A SUBJECTIVE INNER FEELING? The "road to Damascus experience" was peculiar to Paul but it did not save him:- Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? Arise and be baptised and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. ______________________________________________________

  7. ________________________________________ FAITH IS NOT IMPOSED Augustine of Hippo's false "New Theology" - the doctrine of "irresistible grace." (Augustine of Hippo died about 430 AD.) Eph.22:8-9 For by grace (cariV feminine noun, God's favour) you are saved through faith (pistiV feminine noun) and this (touto neuter demonstrative pronoun) not of yourselves.Itis the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. The word “this” does not refer to the words “faith” or “grace.” It refers to the subject matter - 'salvation' [swterion - a neuter adjectival noun]. “It” (salvation) is the gift of God, ________________________________________

  8. ________________________________________ Acts 3:19 Therefore repent and convert (active voice) so that your sins may be blotted out, NOT AV - "... be converted” (passive voice). It man's responsibility to believe, repent and turn around These are not imposed on us by the Holy Spirit. Faith takes place in the mind of man. Forgiveness takes place in 'the mind' of God. Eph.22:8-9 For by favour (God's favour) you are saved through faith (your faith) and this [salvation is] not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. ________________________________________

  9. _______________________________________________ FAITH IS BASED ON EVIDENCE OF TESTIMONY Romans 10;16-17 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our report?" Then faith is from hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. The kind of hearing that takes heed. _______________________________________________ LEVELS OF FAITH THE WORD 'FAITH' HAS SHADES OF MEANING James 2:14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man says he has faith, and does not have works? can that faith save him? James 2:19 You believe that there is one God; you do well: the devils also believe, and tremble. _______________________________________________

  10. _______________________________________________ THE TYPE OF FAITH THAT WE ARE INTERESTED IN IT IS A TRUSTWORTHY GOD CALLS US: 1 Colossians 1:9 God is faithful, by whom ye were called to the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. IT IS A TRUSTWORTHY CREATOR INSISTS THAT WE TRUST HIM IMPLICITLY 1 Peter 4:19 So then, those who suffer according to the will of God must commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as to a faithful Creator. TOTAL TRUST IN ADVERSITY WHICH IS INCURRED BY TRUSTING _______________________________________________

  11. _______________________________ WHAT SHADE OF FAITH Hebrews 11:6 ... he who is coming to God must believe ...that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him. THIS FAITH IS IMPLICIT TRUST _______________________________

  12. _________________________________________________ YHWH IS TOTALLY TRUSTWORTHY 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithfuland just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. THIS DESERVES FAITH THAT DOESN'T WAVER. Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 We should hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for He is faithful that promised;) _________________________________________________

  13. _______________________________________________ WHAT CAUSES / INDUCES - SUCH FAITH? Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me and the life which I now live in the flesh I live in faith of [induced by] the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. PAUL IS TALKING ABOUT IMPLICIT TRUST IN THE CHRIST IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES THIS DEFINES THE FAITH WE ARE CONCERNED WITH _______________________________________________

  14. _______________________________________________________ • SUMMARY: - DEFINING VITAL 'FAITH' - • Two aspects: A) The Body of Faith - What we believe. • B) Personal Faith - The act of believing. • Our subject matter is: B) - The undergirding faith • NOT: gullibleness, subjective, imposed. • Faith takes place in the mind of man. • Forgiveness takes place in the mind of God. • Faith is based on evidence of testimony. • The words faith / belief have shades of meaning. • Vital faith is implicit trust in all circumstances. Other speakers will explain that there is reason for us to have implicit undergirding faith. _______________________________________________________
