  1. Network Connections – e-VLBI Tasso Tzioumis ATNF

  2. Basic Network • 2 dark fibres from NextGen network • AARNet3 regional network • CSIRO + Universities – Gigabit connections • “Production” network (~1 Gb/s) • “Research” Network (~10 Gb/s) x ? • CSIRO ITS Business Case • ATNF inputs • Submitted 13 May 2004 A. Tzioumis

  3. The NextGen Network A. Tzioumis

  4. Network “Lighting up” • Dark Fibres (only 2 lit-up commercially) • Need equipment every 80 Km • $8-10M to light Base network • ”Australia Research & Education Network” (AREN) funding? – $5M • AARNet management of connections • Replace current phone/data links A. Tzioumis

  5. Network speeds & costs • Coarse Wave Division Multiplex (CWDM) • 8 x 1 Gb/s • Relatively inexpensive • Lifecycle 3-4 years • CSIRO $1-1.5M + $150-350k/year • Dense Wave Division Multiplex (DWDM) • 80 x 10 Gb/s (or 40 Gb/s) • CSIRO $1.7-2.5M + $300-500k/year • Lifecycle >10 years A. Tzioumis

  6. “Last mile” connections • Need network “tail-end” connections to each site • Expensive BUT included in budgets • AARNet will manage project • Sites provide “air-conditioned” rack • ATNF sites surveyed and costed (NDC) • Connection Maps A. Tzioumis

  7. Parkes Connections A. Tzioumis

  8. Mopra Connections A. Tzioumis

  9. Narrabri Connections A. Tzioumis

  10. Production Network

  11. Research Network

  12. Tail Link Costs • Production net - $900k-1.4M • +$40k per extra link • Research DWDM network • 10 Gb/s links • $72k for link <600 Km (Mopra, Parkes) • $144k for link >600 Km (Epping) • Tidbinbilla “in scope” • Link with ICON network • Up to $400k? • ANU/Stromlo connections A. Tzioumis

  13. Related & Future links • Mt. Pleasant observatory • LIEF proposal • Ceduna Radio telescope • Long distance (200km) to NextGen • Telstra? • Swinburne • Capital cities network – Traffic? • NTD pathfinder in WA ? • New Norcia? • Overseas – Japan, USA A. Tzioumis

  14. Key Milestones

  15. Benefits • eVLBI – World leader • Data Grid – AVO • Pulsar Timing (ATNF – Swinburne) • Efficient Service delivery (one-IT) • Research Net – enhance CSIRO reputation • (AREN is $42.5M project) A. Tzioumis

  16. eVLBI - Opportunity • Production network will happen • Independent of eVLBI • Great opportunity • High BW connections to telescopes • Minimal cost to ATNF/Unis • “leverage” on developments • Unique opportunity – MUST take!! A. Tzioumis
