Transition Background • 2008 – 19 Community Centers slated for closure • January 2010 – 25 Cornerstone Programs • January 2014 – 45 Additional Programs • July 2015 – Remaining 24 Programs First time 69 of the centers are being procured
Community Engagement Process • Market Research: • 18 focus groups with parents • 4 focus groups with teens • Parent and youth surveys • Community input meetings with: • NYCHA resident leadership • Community-based organizations • Principals • Law enforcement
Key Findings • An hour a day for homework • Academic enrichment activities • College preparation activities • Structured recreational activities that help children stay fit and combat obesity while having fun • Computer and technology activities • Employment, work readiness services • Adult programming
Program Goals • Ensure a safe, welcoming, inclusive environment that fosters a sense of belonging • Provide holistic services directly or through community partnerships • Tap the strengths and talents of community members • Help participants develop skills, fulfill personal goals, and access services • Give youth “voice” and “choice” with engaging activities and opportunities to develop leadership skills • Promote intergenerational activities • Enhance services through partnerships with other DYCD-funded programs, City agencies, and community-based service providers
Center Operating Hours • School Year - Weekdays (Monday-Friday)* - 2pm - 10pm • School Year - Weekends (Saturday OR Sunday – 44 days) 10am - 5pm • School Closing Days (15 days) 8am - 6pm • Summer - Weekdays (Monday-Friday) 8am - 6pm • Summer Weekday Evenings (8 weeks) 6pm - 11pm • Summer Weekends (Saturdays AND Sundays) 3pm - 11pm

Community Partnerships • Other DYCD-funded programs located nearby (e.g., Fatherhood, Neighborhood Development Area, Workforce Development, Literacy, Immigrant Family Services); • Other City agencies or organizations funded by those agencies; • Other local organizations, including small grassroots volunteer groups, that offer specific types of resources such as recreational and fitness activities, civic engagement activities, arts and cultural activities, or education and career services (see Section 3B, Resources); • Providers of services such as health, mental health, or dental care willing to accept referrals, enabling timely access to services not provided at the Cornerstone site; • Museums and other cultural institutions; • Providers delivering Cornerstone services at satellite sites (whether the sites are operated by the proposer or another organization). 30
Frequently Asked Questions Will Providers be responsible for Maintenance and Repairs? Will the centers be rented out on the weekends? Will there be furniture and equipment at the centers or will providers have to purchase new items for startup? 31
