  1. Being effective in what you do (Pt 2) Encounter Service 10 Nov 2018 Cecil Ang

  2. Recap Habit 1: Be Proactive Habit 2: Begin with the end in mind Habit 3: Put first things first These habits have to do with developing our own personal mastery; they are within our control Habits 4 – 6: Relating to others

  3. Relating to One Another 1 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you looknot only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Phil 2:1-4 ESV

  4. Relating to One Another 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.  Phil 2:5-8 ESV

  5. Relating to One Another Examples of those who looked out for the interest of others: • Jesus Christ: humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death (2:8) • Timothy: genuinely concerned for your welfare (2:19) • Epaphroditus: longing for you all … distressed because you heard he was ill … near death (2:26-27) • Paul: join in imitating me … (3:17) • Philippians: you have revived your concern for me (4:10) I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Phil 4:2 NIV

  6. Quotation “Sow a thought, reap an act  Sow an act, reap a habitSow a habit, reap a characterSow a character, reap a destiny” Ralph Waldo Emerson

  7. Habit 4: Think win-winEveryone-can-win attitude 18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. 22 Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven. Col 3:18-22; 4:1 ESV

  8. Habit 4: Think win-winEveryone-can-win attitude • Relationship need not be a win-lose situation “When one side benefits more than the other, that’s a win-lose situation. To the winner it might look like success for awhile, but in the long run, it breeds resentment and distrust.” Stephen Covey

  9. Habit 4: Think win-winEveryone-can-win attitude • Evaluate our relationships in the following: • Family (husband-wife, parent-child, domestic helper, etc.) • School (teacher-student, peers, coaches, etc.) • Work (employer-employee, clients, colleagues, etc.) • Church (pastor-parishioner, brothers, sisters, etc.) • Others (friend, neighbour, acquaintance, etc.)

  10. Habit 4: Think win-winEveryone-can-win attitude • Three vital character traits to have in approaching conflict: • Integrity: sticking with your true feelings, values, and commitments (not compromising) • Maturity: expressing your ideas and feelings with courage and consideration for the ideas and feelings of others (show understanding) • Abundance Mentality: believing there is plenty for everyone (display humility)

  11. Habit 5: Seek first to under-stand then to be understoodListen to people sincerely “Teach me, and I will be silent; make me understand how I have gone astray.” Job 6:24 ESV “Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.” Pr 17:27 ESV “The purpose in a man's heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.” Pr 20:5 ESV

  12. Habit 5: Seek first to understand then to be understoodListen to people sincerely • Communication is an important skill • Build trust by listening; clarify issues raised • Speak clearly & respectfully, bearing in mind what you’ve heard "Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.“ Stephen Covey

  13. Habit 6: SynergizeWork together to achieve more 26 He (Apollos) began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. 27 And when he wished to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed, 28 for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures that the Christ was Jesus. Acts 18:26-28 ESV

  14. Habit 6: SynergizeWork together to achieve more • “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” African Proverb • Two heads are better than one • Value each other’s strengths/differences

  15. Put on the new self 10 Put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. 12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.  Col 3:10,12-14 ESV
