Challenges and Changes • Challenges of a digital age • New models for teaching and learning in higher education • Emergent patterns of scholarly communications • Radical changes in users expectations and requirements • Changes of academic libraries • Academic libraries have courageously responded to the changes with service innovation, functional extension and technology implementing in order to demonstrate their ongoing contributions to teaching, learning, research in a new environment (i.e. finish their digital turn) “Academic libraries are changing faster than at any time in their history” (the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) )

Challenges and Changes • Changes of Academic libraries (cont’d) • In a new environment, the library is distinguished and evaluated not by the content of its collections, but by the scope and quality of its services, therefore, library services become more important than ever • Academic libraries in mainland China are making great efforts to improve their services and enhance support for e-Learning, e-Science and e-Scholarship • More practices and examples can be drawn from Chinese academic libraries, and my presentation will specifically focus on our experiences at Peking University Library

Discovery and delivery solutions—Enhance searching • Web-Scale Discovery—Easy & Fast We select Summon as a discovery and delivery toolafter 2 years thorough investigation • Features • Through one simple search to a single unified index and get the results easily and quickly • Integrating printed collection with digital resource and current library operations well • Efforts • First library implementing Summon in mainland China: Chinese Localization, Chinese data processing, etc.

  7. Web-Scale Discovery—Easy & Fast Summon Content types include: library catalog records, e-journal articles, databases, newspaper articles, e-books, dissertations, conference proceedings, more data will be added

Subject Liaison Services • Exploring new approaches to enhance the support for teaching and research • The subject librarian team is re-organized in the fall of 2010 • New mechanisms for outreach and engagement with our faculty and students are established • Embedded information literacy education into curriculum • Provide in-depth support for key research programs • Evaluate the university’s research performance

Subject Liaison Services • Patterns for embedded information literacy • Physical—in person • Embedded librarians work closely over time with faculty by delivering joint courses • Virtual—online • Participating in broad curriculum activities via web and maintaining a virtual presence in courses

Case: Librarian as co-instructor join a semester-long course in Law School • Course Description • Name: Legal Research and Writing • 32 credit hours in total, 12 credit hours are assigned to librarians • librarians and faculty working together to prepare a course syllabus, discuss course content and find teaching cases • Jointly teaching students • Co-developing assessment measures

Further collaboration • The librarians convince faculty of the benefit from collaboration, they realized: • Librarians hold the collections and have the technical expertise in data/content storage, processing & management • The Law School has wealthy of legal cases, so the teacher proposes further collaboration with librarians • Both work together to create a case-based legal database • Jointly apply for grants and projects, etc. • Outreaching and embedding benefit both librarians and faculty

Subject Liaison Services • Embedding services are becoming more and more popular • Many teachers come to library to invite librarians joining their classes—virtual or physical • Currently, Librarians of PKU Library collaborate with faculty across departments such as Chinese Language Department, History Department, Philosophy Department, School of Software and Microelectronics ,etc.

What we have got from embedded information literacy? • Partnership with faculty could open librarians’ mind and break their traditional thinking • librarians: To start their information literacy course always based on database, journal, eBook, etc. • Faculty: To start their information literacy education based on their research process and scholarly models –e.g. how to propose a plan, how to apply for a grant and conduct research, how to follow the academic standards, etc. • Librarians should re-design information literacy programs from the users’ perspectives • However, the human resources of library are limited, we should find new way to expand the services— • Teach the Teachers

Focus on some key research projects, specially on those funded by National Social Science Foundation or National Natural Science Foundation • Offer various services at different periods (1)Earlier Stage of the project • Use bibliometric methods to explore the development of research fields • Perform a patent or novelty search to determine whether the researcher’s idea is truly novel, or has been anticipated before expending much effort to apply for the project

(2)Mid-later stage of the project • Assist researchers to search and locate materials • Help them to use all kinds of new digital tools • Provide information about publication, academic standards, sustainable development, etc. • Tips: • Employ librarians’ strengths—information expert • Librarians shouldn’t act as a scientific secretary

  17. Example: The National Social Science Foundation Project “Research about foreign literature in China over 60-year period” The project group put forward needs and the Librarians were responsible for collecting documents and data Requirements from the project

Make comparative analysis of its performance in the global community, which aims to identify the university’s research strengths, competitive advantages, threats, and opportunities • Example 1: • Librarians working with Office of Planning and Policy Research of PKU to evaluate the research performance of Peking University

  20. What we have done Identify the university’s research strengths Measure team and individual performance Make comparison and analyze the impact of competitive intelligence Help the administrators to make the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" (i.e. Peking University Developmental Plan in near future)

Features of the evaluation • Based on multiple databases to avoid the one-sidedness • Data analysis is based on both subjects and the unit (e.g. the school, departments) instead of subject-based only like most commercial providers do • Concentrate on the interdisciplinary and emerging disciplines • Pay more attention to humanities and social sciences • Potential strengths are much highlighted rather than the past performance

  25. Example 3: • Collaborate with Office of Scientific Research to identify and assess existing and potential overseas funds and partner institutions, which aims to seek more international collaborations and bring Peking University to the world

People Oriented Services • Deliver an emotional graduation for students • During graduation season, the library will launch a physical “graduate wall” and graduate cyberspace , to let the graduates leave their remarks about their experiences and thoughts here in PKU Library,which could encourage the current students and connect the graduates with students emotionally
