  2. Electron Dot Symbols also called Lewis Symbols uses dots to represent the valence (outer) electrons in an atom.

  3. For example, a model of a carbon atom…. 1s2 2s22p2 …shows that it has 2 electrons in the first energy level and 4 electrons in the outer energy level.

  4. C In Electron Dot Symbols, only the electrons in the outer energy level are shown. These are called valence electrons. So the Lewis symbol for carbon is: Even though carbon has 6 electrons, only 4 are in the outer shell.
