  1. Year 1 Phonics Screening

  2. What is phonics? • Children are taught to read by breaking down words into separate sounds or ‘phonemes’. They are then taught how to blend these sounds together to read the whole word. • Children have a 30 minutes phonics lesson each day and they are encouraged to use these strategies to read and write in other lessons. • There are around 40 different sounds.

  3. What will the children be expected to do? • The check is very similar to tasks the children already complete during phonics lessons. • Children will be asked to ‘sound out’ a word and blend the sounds together, e.g. d-o-g - dog • The focus of the check is to see which sounds the children know and therefore the children will be asked to read made up ‘nonsense’ words. THIS IS NOT A READING TEST

  4. Phonics Phases Phonics is split into six phases. By the end of Year 1, children are expected to be working within Phase Five. .

  15. How can you help? • When reading with children, encourage them to put the sounds buttons under a word to highlight the sounds that make the word. • Encourage the children when they are writing to use their phonics to spell a word rather than spelling it out for them. • Encourage the children to put the sound buttons under the words to find the digraphs/trigraphs/split-digraphs. • Read regularly at home.

  16. How can you help? • REMEMBER: Phonics is not the only thing needed to become a fluent reader. • Please continue to read with your child each night and encourage them to sound out and re-read to check it makes sense. • You can go online and get examples of previous tests if you would like to practice at home. • http://www.satspapers.org.uk/Page.aspx?TId=21 (scroll down and there is lots of past papers)
