  1. This Christmas ad got banned trying to save the environment. Here’s why! Iceland Food's Christmas advertisement, spoken by Emma Thompson, highlights the devastation caused by producers of palm oil, but ends up being banned for being too political. Recently, UN released a alert saying that we have just 12 years to avoid irreversible harm to the Planet, and while major retailers across the globe were busy making saccharine Christmas advertisements to make us weep, Iceland thought of getting us acquainted with the ground truth. With the video, they announced their decision to stop using palm oil as an ingredient in all of their label products by the end of 2018, which is a significant move for the supermarket chain going by the number of products. The short film produced by Iceland's environmental NGO Greenpeace shows the sad plight of an Orangutan whose rainforest habitat has been ruined by palm oil growers. Clear cast – an organization that approves advertisements on behalf of broadcasters, has decided to avoid showing this crucial message to millions of viewers who inadvertently buy products containing palm oil that do not know the environmental damage it causes. Clearcast came up with a declaration in their defense that they were worried about the commercial non-compliance with the political advertisement legislation.

  2. After this, thousands of people came out in solidarity and posted on social media the ad around. Iceland's managing director, Richard Walker, said this Christmas ad was the retailer's "first chance to prove that we can put commercial interests on the side to make the changes necessary to save our planet in the wake of the landmark United Nations report." Businesses play a major role in promoting social change, and Iceland has managed to attract a great deal of exposure to the right cause with this commercial.
