  3. DATES • Tang 618 AD • Song 690 AD

  4. Qin Dynasty 221 – 206 BC • In 221 BC, a leader united China and started the QIN dynasty • The Qin (CHIN) empire was very strict but powerful

  5. QIN ACCOMPLISHMENTS • Accomplishments: • Created laws that applied to everyone in China • New system of money • United China with roads • Built the GREAT WALL OF CHINA on the Northern border

  6. HAN Dynasty 205 BC – 220 AD • Liu Bang was a poor farmer who became the first leader of this dynasty • He was well liked by both the rich and poor • Han emperors made the government stronger by: • Raising taxes • Creating schools to prepare people for government jobs • Controlled the economy

  7. Han Accomplishments • Poetry and stories • Inventions • Education

  8. Tang Dynasty 618 AD • Control East and South Asia • ‘golden age’ • Improved the military to make it stronger • Built huge cities • Empress Wu: first female empress in China

  9. Song Dynasty 960 – 1279 AD • Built a strong government with many leaders • Invented many new goods and ideas • Built huge trade routes across the East

  18. Mandate Of Heaven • Idea that ‘heaven’ chose China’s rulers and gave them power • Sentence: The emperor’s power was not challenged because the people believed he was chosen by God.

  19. Philosophy • A set of ideas and beliefs; searching for knowledge

  20. Quagmire • Soft land or a difficult situation with no clear solution

  21. Confucious ' Beliefs • Respect your elders and ancestors • Loyalty to your family members • Work hard (get smart…woooooo)

  30. Lived from 551 -479 BC • Wanted peace and order in China • Great thinker • Taught that people should respect each other and have good relationships • Dynasties in China, especially the Han Dynasty follow his beliefs

  31. Analects Sayings from Confucius • A book of sayings collected by his followers • This is a primary document because they help us understand what Confucius believed and are directly from him! • His sayings teach positive behaviors

  32. Filial Piety RESPECT YOUR FAMILY • This is the respect which children owe to parents • …and wives owe to husbands • sisters to brothers • and everyone to ancestors • When this respect is taught at home, it is supposed to carry over into society and government as well

  38. Social Life • Upper class: • Emperor, wealthy leaders, scholars who work for the government, military • Second Class: • Peasants • Largest group • Third Class: • Artisans • Lowest Class: • Merchants People were ranked by their jobs , not how much money they had
