  1. Warm Up 8/13/09 Solve the equations completely: Leave as fractions - NO mixed numbers or decimal answers. x=0 1.) 2.) All Real Numbers 3.) No solution 4.) X = -11/4

  2. Today’s Agenda • Warm Up • Answers to homework • Notes on Formulas and Functions QUIZ Tomorrow

  3. 1.4 – Formulas & Functions What’s a Formula? - a bunch of numbers and letters, right? - nah! - A formula is an algebraic equation that relates two or more real-life quantities Here’s some examples of formulas: A=lw d = rt V=lwh I=Prt

  4. Let’s look at the Rectangle Area Formula A = lw Suppose we want to use the Area formula to find length for a bunch of Rectangles. It would make sense to change the problem so that we have length equals the other stuff. So let’s solve the area formula for l.

  5. To isolate l we need to divide both sides of the equation by w. A = lw w w or Now we can use this equation to calculate the length of a rectangle if we are given the Area and width

  6. Solve the equation 5x + y = 8 for y Move every thing except y to the right side of the equation. 5x + y = 8 -5x -5x y = - 5x + 8

  7. Exploring Methods: Find the value of y for the given value of x using two methods. Method 1: Substitute the value of x into the equation and then solve for y.

  8. Method 2: Solve for y and then substitute the value of x into the equation.

  9. One More Thing… • Let’s work one from the worksheet
