  1. Metavision 3rd E3 IST Concertation Meeting Brussels 3-10-2000

  2. Project Partners • 1. Snell & Wilcox (Project Leader) • 2. BBC • 3. INESC (Portugal) • 4. Electrocraft • 5. France 2 • 6. Arnold Richter (Germany) • 7. MRT (Oslo) • 8. University of Padova (Italy)

  3. Major Project Objectives • Create and demonstrate a Universal Electronic Production System capable of meeting the demands of both the Film and Television Industries. • Propose a method of asset tracking (conforming to standards currently under development) which will ensure that each archived version of the assets will contain a history of the processing used since its creation.

  4. The aims of Metavision • Maintain the quality of high resolution film-rate electronic video by the use of meta-data through all stages of capture, compression and format conversion

  5. Why do it? • allows more artistic flexibility • lowers production costs • readily converts to existing distribution media (Film, HDTV, SDTV…) • is designed for efficient conversion to existing compression formats (MPEG-2) • takes into account the future requirements of compression schemes (MPEG-4) • conforms to the metadata formats, currently under consideration in the standards bodies (MPEG-7 and SMPTE) • can be archived at various reference qualities depending on application • allows the future integration of real and virtual images at source quality both for electronic film production and in the compressed domain for use in TV studios

  6. Roles of Partners • Snell & Wilcox - Project leader, standards conversion, external liaison • BBC - user requirements and evaluation • INESC - metadata based remote command and control architecture • Electrocraft - compression, post-production • France 2 - user requirements and evaluation • ARRI & MRT - camera development, image creation and production house (end user) requirements • University of Padova - lossless compression algorithm and metadata generation
