  1. NLMG 21/22 Wednesday, 16 November 2011

  2. SETTING: • Discuss settings used so far. • Hailsham, Cottages, Cromer, the centres… • How does Ishiguro use them and with what effect? • Read pp 243.9 -245.7

  3. The house • What is a labyrinth? • How does this house resemble a labyrinth from Mythology? • Why do you think this might be?

  4. Language • Can you find evidence from the section you have just read of Ishiguro trying to use setting to create atmosphere/foreshadow/develop character? • FEED BACK

  5. CHARACTER • Madame – what do you remember of her from part 1? • Does her house resemble her character in any way? • Look again at pp246-the end of chapter 21

  6. Quotations for discussion. • “perhaps I imagined it – she tucked her shoulders in tightly…” 246.4 • “It was the first time she’d spoken for ages and we both jolted back in surprise…” 247.6 • “Her voice sounded almost sarcastic… little tears in her eyes” 247.7 • “ You believe this? That you’re deeply in love? And therefore you’ve come to me for this… this deferral? Why? Why?” 247.8 • “Do I go too far?” – count the repetitions of this or of the idea • “Poor creatures” 249.8 and 267.4 ( in light of discussion of the tape)

  7. EMILY • “The figure in the wheelchair was frail and contorted…” • Look at part one and collect Miss Emily references. What is your impression of her? • What is the effect of Ishiguro’s description now? • What lives at the centre of a labyrinth? • Who is in charge now?

  8. Attitude • Look at pp251 and 252. How might you describe Miss Emily’s tone? Give examples. • How does her tone help Kathy and Tommy express themselves with honesty? • What seems to be her focus in the conversation? – the experiment or the development of the clones? • FEAR or clones. Find evidence to suggest that the emotional response to the clones from the Guardians is one based on fear and revulsion.

  9. Told and Not Told • Morningdale… look at the descriptor. • Who are “they”? • Note the use of the removal men who seem to be taking apart this world. The chapter is full of references to the closure of Hailsham and even this world is collapsing around its inhabitants

  10. TOMMY • Why does Tommy breakdown at this point? What is the significance of his childhood tantrums? • Read 268.5 to the end of chapter 22. What language is Ishiguro choosing to create specific effects? Write a T-table to list the language and its effect. • Is there any deliberate symbolism in Tommy seeming to emerge from the earth? • What is the effect of Kathy’s language? • Why does Ishiguro close the chapter in the way that he does?
