  1. What will it take to get data out of the CFT?* Don Lincoln CFT Commissioning Czar Fermilab Run II Meeting May 12, Y2K * that’s John’s title, not mine........

  2. What will it take to get data out of the CFT? • Work • Lots and Lots of Work

  3. Central Fiber Tracker Status • 8 layers • Outer 6 • 2.52 m • Inner 2 • 1.66 m • r - .2 to .51 m • Axial readout to south • VLPC Readout • Waveguide system • 8-11.5 m • “Pipes” light from detector to VLPCs

  4. CFT Status - Done Stuff • Fiber Ribbons (roughly 400 ribbons) • VLPC Characterization 17,000 chips tested, 15,500 OK • VLPC Recovery 2,200 tested, 1,100 recovered • So total useful chips 16,600

  5. CFT Status - Ribbon Mounting Going Very Well - To Spec 30 mm rms Last cylinder (1) getting stereo ribbons attached now Project Tomorrow completion 50 mm e-e offset

  6. CFT Status - Nesting Cylinders 8,7,6,5,4 & 3 nested CFT Completion - 5/19/00 Delivered to DAB by 6/15/00 Global precision »15mm (Measured vs Desired)

  7. CFT Status - Waveguides • Waveguide Production • CPS complete (IU) • Fiber pulling/sheathing at ND 75% complete for CFT • Fiber sorted • Best (attn.L from Kuraray) - longest runs [8-11.5m] • FPS at IU • CFT WG Connectorization • At ND + Fermilab + IU • 50 with curved end connectors • Expect to complete production in August (100+ July 15) • CFT Hookup and commissioning complete by 9/1/00

  8. CFT Status - Readout System • VLPC Characterization/test/sort now complete • Cassette Assignment • As shown (includes cassettes 1-10)

  9. CFT Status - Readout System II • Cassette production • Approximately 50% of sub-component complete • All components in-house except Flex circuit • Flex Circuit • Production deliveries starting • 600 of 2000 in hand • »100/week

  10. CFT Status - Readout III • Cassette Test - Going Well • Noise low (Stereo Board) • Good uniformity

  11. CFT Status - Cryo • Fabrication delayed by delivery of top plates • Now in house • To spec • Making up some time • Welding going well • Final Cryo Operational in June

  12. CFT Status - Conclusions • CFT construction is going well • Mechanical assembly is to specification • Complete in mid-May • VLPC + Cryo • VLPC characterization/selection complete • 1024 channel cassettes working well • Cassette production assembly underway • Subcomponents 50% complete • First 10 (11?) production cassettes assembled • All cassettes leaving factory have met specifications • CFT wave guide production • Fiber pulling/sheathing going well (far along) • Connectorization underway

  13. Major Installation Activities During Next 3 Months April May June July Collision Wall down – Hi Bay full survey to July 15 Collision Wall back up Collision Wall down Install/align CFT Platform moves: pick up EF north/south Install gas/cooling lines in Collision Hall Solenoid Test Install CFT cable ductwork in platform survey Install VLPC cryostats in platform End detectors installed (FPS, ICD, L0) survey Survey east PDTs Forward Muon Installation Rework/reassemble shielding mid-pieces Rework EF shielding pieces survey Stage/survey N/S shielding survey survey Install South truss in Hi Bay, re-weld arms Install both EF shields Install EMC-S MDTs and pixels • Crane needed • Platform occupied • ICR occupied • CF closed; no cal preamp access Disassemble EMC-S for move to sidewalk survey survey Install N/S A-layer pixels Install N/S A-layer MDTs

  15. Commissioning Plan • CFT arrives DAB mid-June, install and survey (Gaston) • Cryostat install and hookup through mid June, testing cooldown followed by cassette insertion, end of June (Russ) • As waveguides hooked up (CPS, 8, 7, etc.), testing is needed • Current plan: • 2 people/crew, 2 crews/shift, 2 shifts/day, 2 LG/crew/shift • 8 lightguides/day. (300 CFT light guides  8 weeks) • Initial test, LED pulsers on the ribbons, secondary electrical. • Verify light continuity. • Verify photoelectron noise consistent with temperature and voltage • Electrical noise.

  16. Needed Components  • CFT cylinders: In DAB mid-late June • Cryostat: Operational late-June • Cassettes: In DAB June/July (30-ish, 11 in hand now) • LHe: Tested already, hiatus early July (end iron) • Lightguides: In DAB June/July, all CPS, 100 CFT (7/8 S/A) • Cables: In house (AFE  sequencer  VRB) • DAQ: Running now • Unpacking: SVX unpacking done, some mapping remains. • Examines: Available now, will need tweaking for commissioning • Cosmics: Piggyback on muon trigger • Tracking: Cosmic tracking mostly OK, minor technical fixes • Event Display: Ready in some form

  17. Needed Components  • Front End Electronics: • AFE not available, use stereo board, limited availability • LED Electronics: • Two components, small card (300-ish), large driver/control card (10-ish) • Small cards available early June • Large controller cards maybe available mid-August...Gack! • Sequencer  VRB cable pull late July • Silicon uses same cables, need splitter, not available • Can pull the small number of CFT fiber optic cables first • CFT Online guru: • CFT Calibration guru: Not yet filled • Control/Download guru: }

  18. Summary • Much of the required components are in place for mid-July hookup/commissioning • Some aren’t • They will be
