  2. Pet stores employees don't know what they are talking about most of the time. This is because they are not taught how to properly take care of the animals in their care. If they are, the information they receive is wrong. Petsmart's care sheet tells you that hermit crabs need 50-60% relative humidity when you really need 70-85%. Petsmart's care sheet also tells you that you need a small pet store cage for guinea pigs when in reality you need a much larger, home-made cage. (www.cavycages.com)‏ Lack of Knowledge

  3. Dangerous Products • Petsmart sells dangerous products like exercise wheels, exercise balls, and leashes for guinea pigs. These sort of objects will permanently damage a guinea pig's back. • Petsmart sells tiny, plastic containers for hermit crabs when hermit crabs really need a MUCH larger habitat. Hermit crabs are best left to their natural habitat, but if you already have hermit crabs, you can still keep them if you know how to properly care for them. Hermit cabs live much longer in the wild than in captivity. They are un-releasable to the wild.

  4. Dangerous Products • Hermit crab food contains ingredients that can severely harm a hermit crab. Do not buy your hermit crab “hermit crab food.” Instead, give your hermit crab organic “human food.” You have to make sure you provide your hermit crab with adequate nutrition, however. • Petsmart sells guinea pig food mixed with seeds and many more things that guinea pigs can easily choke on. • Small animals are not the only ones negatively affected by what Petsmart sells. Petsmart also sells Hartz flea & tick products, which can be fatal to cats and dogs. Instead, you should use Frontline or Advantage on your cat or dog if it has fleas.

  5. Dangerous Products • Mirrors for birds are usually not recommended by bird trainers, because they lessen the chance of your bird becoming tame. • Vitamin C water drops are highly not recommended for guinea pigs. They often contain harmful ingredients. They even put Vitamin C water drops in the water their own pet store guinea pigs consume.

  6. Neglect • Instead of seeking vet care, which would cost Petsmart thousands due to the crappy, diseased breeding facilities Petsmart gets their animals from, Petsmart tends to ignore health problems of their animals. This is against the law, but since most Petsmarts only sell small animals, their neglect is often over-looked.

  7. Dickson, City, PA Neglect May 31st, 2008 • Guinea pigs who contract upper respiratory infections often have their fur puffed up, crusty eyes, and barely move. They also breathe heavy. This is what I observed on May 31st, 2008. I told one of the workers, and they also agreed that the guinea pig had an upper resp. infection. I took a picture with my cell-phone for proof of neglect. I went to the pet store again the next day to get some more proof. He was still in the same, exact spot the same day. Nobody had bothered to do a thing for him.

  19. The Bottom Line • Petsmart is a business, meaning its purpose is to make profit. Petsmart considers the animals they sell “products.” Living, breathing “products.” Should living, breathing beings be considered a product? I think not.

  21. What You Can Do • E-mail cs@petsmart.com and urge them not to sell animals. • Boycott Petsmart. It DOES work. They will have less money to use to purchase “stock.” If you “rescue” animals, they will just be replaced with MORE animals. MORE animals will end up in Petsmart, especially if you keep rescuing them. You cannot rescue them all, and they'll soon have too much “stock” for you to rescue. • Petco, Pet Supplies Plus, and almost all pet stores are like this. It is best to boycott them all.

  22. What You Can Do • Spread the word! Do whatever you can to inform people about Petsmart's cruelty to animals. Search YouTube videos on the subject and send them to people, link to www.petsmartcruelty.com wherever you can, even write on your school supplies like folder and binders about it. Do whatever it takes to spread the word about Petsmart's cruelty to animals.

  23. What You Can Do • Forward this presentation to as many people as possible. This way, many more people will learn about Petsmart's cruelty to animals. Feel free to also burn this presentation to CD's if you want to show it to people do or whatever else you can think of with the CD. Whatever you do with this presentation, though, must help animals in some way.

  24. What You Can Do • Report cruelty you see Petsmart doing to animals to your local Humane Society or ASPCA. Symptoms of pet store cruelty include, but are not limited to, dirty cages; no food and/or water; no necessary vet care; confined cage; etc. Animal cruelty laws differ from state to state. Be sure to research your local animal cruelty laws. Recommended: http://www.animallaw.info/statutes/topicstatutes/sttoac.htm
