Jeju World Heritage’s Values and Socio-economic Meanings Ⅱ. ◎ Jeju World Heritages by UNESCO - World Biosphere Reserve (December 6, 2002) - World Natural Heritage (June 27, 2007) - Global Geopark (October, 2010) ◎ Jeju World Heritages' Values and Meanings • Until the end of 1990s, the physical development against Jeju nature and landscape was stressed, thus led to Jeju local economy growth. • Since the designation of world heritages such as World Biosphere Reserve, • World Natural Heritage, Global Geopark in Jeju, social, economic and • environmental values and meanings have been rapidly changed into • reserving a much more public goods. • Jeju world heritages'values and meanings would be construct and • reconstructed endlessly in a changing and dynamic society as a whole · 3

Jeju’s Environment Education Reality and Problems • Environment Education Problems in Jeju * Lack of professional textbooks for environment education * Lack of teaching experts for environment education Less development of education programs and facilities related to Jeju natural environment * * Not enough for the financial aids in the environment education Difficulty to foster the environment experts due to lack of professional knowledge and information * 5

Jeju’s Environment Education Reality and Problems Non-existence of environment education programs for general companies * Lack of diversity in the environment education programs * Lack of networking web among the environment education institutes * Quantity increase tendency of environment education rather than its quality in the county level(Eup, Myun, Dong Office unit) * Not interest in long-term environment education for Jeju' s sustainable development * 6

Toward Environment Education System Building in Jeju * To improve an environment guide quality Environment education research and its R&D projects are more needed. * Reflection of education consumers' interests and needs in a variety of environment education program * Establishment of Jeju International Environment College in order to visualize Jeju' s worldwide hub role for the environmental education * A financial supporting system legalization under Jeju Provincial Government Act. * 9
