  2. ESSENTIAL QUESTION!!!!! • How can an artist COMMUNICATE something (or many things) about a subject of a painting utilizing the ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES??

  3. Who was Modigliani? Amedeo Clemente Modigliani was an Italian painter and sculptor who worked mainly in France. He was born in 1884 in Italy and died when he was just 35 years old in France.

  4. Looking Deeper… • Ponder Point #1: How does Modigliani utilize color? What kind of color schemes does he employ?

  5. Why did he die so young? Modigliani had tuberculosis and often masked his pain and coughing by drugs and alcohol… he did not like isolation and wanted desperately to preserve his camaraderie. These acts of self-destruction in combination with his tuberculosis led to a tragically short lived life.

  6. What was he famous for? Primarily a figurative artist, he became known for paintings and sculptures.

  7. Let’s finish by looking at some Modigliani inspired artwork by other artists…

  8. Looking Deeper… • Ponder Point #2: How does the artist render EYES?

  9. Looking Deeper… • Ponder Point #3: How is HAIR rendered? (think shape, color, form, line…)

  10. Looking Deeper… • Ponder Point #4: TEXTURE. What do you notice about how the artist creates texture and PATTERNS in his work??

  11. Looking Deeper… • Ponder Point #5: How are the subjects posed? Do they look natural or unnatural?

  12. Looking Deeper… • Ponder Point #6: Modigliani’s work is very STYLIZED. (Not realistic. Unique. His style is very recognizable.) hat kind of traits make a Modigliani a Modigliani and different from other artists?

  13. Looking Deeper… • Ponder Point #7: Pretend for a moment that you have been asked to sit for Modigiani and be the subject of one of his paintings. Which traits of yours would be important to include so it would be recognizable as you? Which colors would he use to suit your unique personality?

  14. Model Work • Does this look as if it was influenced by Modigliani? • What is a strength you recognize? • What could be done differently to make is more “Modigliani” like? • 1

  17. What are characteristics of Modigliani’s Work? He had a modern style characterized by mask-like faces and elongation of form.

  18. How are his sculptures similar to his paintings?

  19. He often painted portraits of his wife (Jeanne Hebuterne), as seen in this image.

  20. What are some things you would think about when mixing paint to paint a portrait like this?

  21. What do you think inspired his style of work? It could be that it was said he developed the belief that the only route to true creativity was through defiance and disorder.

  22. He died penniless and destitute, but today his paintings and sculptures are worth millions. Musee de l'Orangerie in Paris

  23. What we are going to do: We are going to start by drawing a stylized portrait lightly in pencil. The rest is up to you.It is not super realistic so it allows for a looser interpretation of the facial proportions. We will color with color pencils, or watercolors or mixed techniques. Option: If you like , You can include an elongated face, stretched neck, and large, almond shaped eyes if you choose Modigliani style.

  24. Self Portraits… • How can the following effect the MOOD of a SELF PORTRAIT and communicate specific messages to the viewer? • COLOR • TEXTURE • GESTURE (POSE • COMPOSITION

  25. following steps: Make a list of words that describe you. Include your favorite color and favorite animal, characteristics of your family, where you are from, what you like to do, your interests, your friends, what music you like, etc. Describe images, textures, colors, etc. that would represent these words next to them. You are creating symbols with which to describe yourself.

  26. Following steps Using a mirror, draw your self-portrait (head and shoulders). Here are some hints on facial proportions Using a cellphone take a picture of yourself, send the picture to a computer and print. Using an old picture, enlarge the picture with a copy machine

  27. Steps • Begin with the eyes. • There is one eye width between the eyes. • The bottom of the nose is approximately one eye width from the bottom of the eye. • The bottom of your bottom lip is approximately two eye widths from the bottom of the eye. • The bottom of your chin is approximately one eye width from the bottom of your mouth. • of your eyes. • Your shoulders extend almost a full head width from the side of the head.

  28. next • To measure for the top of your head: It is the same distance from the bottom of your eyes to the bottom of your chin as it is from the bottom of your eyes to the top of your head. • Notice that the corners of your mouth line up with the iris of your eyes, and the corners of your nose line up with the tear ducts of your eyes. • Your neck lines up with the outer corners
