Canadarm Robotic Technology • Robotic arm that performed tasks on the ISS • Used in designing prosthetic hands from amputees • Used in robotics to clean up toxic spills, bomb defusing • Testing underway to see if can be used to conduct remote robotic surgeries in areas where specialists are not readily available

  3. GPS • Global Positioning Systems • Originally used by the military • Today 24 GPS satellites orbit Earth, twice daily • Used to find longitude/latitude of a receiver anywhere on Earth, regardless of weather conditions

How GPS Systems Work • 3+ satellites send a signal to the receiver • Uses triangulation to determine location • Transmit information continuously How Does a GPS Work First satellite tells you that you are 340km from Toronto With a compass draw a circle around Toronto that represents a radius of 340km. A second satellite tells you that you are 800km from Thunder Bay Draw a circle around Thunder Bay that represents a radius of 800km A third satellite tells you that you 350km from Iroquois Falls Draw a circle around Iroquois Falls that represents a radius of 350km Determine your location Answer the Following: Why use 3 satellites Some cellphones now have GPS technology, what might you use this for?
