  2. Aims of presentation Gain an understanding of Community Development Workers role, the aims and objectives. Gain an understanding of the ways Community Development Workers can support Services.

Delivering Race Equality & New Horizons Department of Health Agenda 2005-2010 Delivering Race Equality in Mental Health Care (DRE) is an Action Plan for achieving equality and tackling discrimination in Mental Health Services. Department of Health Agenda 2010-2020 New Horizons New Horizons is a comprehensive programme of action for improving the mental well-being of the population and the services that care for people with poor mental health by 2020.

  4. What does a Community Development worker do? A community development worker works with communities and a range of agencies in order to collectively bring about social change and improve quality of life.

  6. Learning & Education as positive change We aim to empower communities by providing them with the skills and knowledge they need to improve their wellbeing. Community Development is about influencing power structures to remove barriers that prevent people from participating in the issues that affect their lives, through education and continuous learning.

  9. CDWs work with…. • Local communities • Voluntary & Community Organisations • Statutory Services

CDWs aim to… • Help to tackle discrimination and improve access to Mental Health services for BME & other ‘hard to reach’ communities. • Empower communities by identifying their needs, opportunities, rights & responsibilities; working with them to recognise and plan what they want to achieve & take appropriate action.

  11. CDWs aim to… • Act as facilitators to promote self-help and sustainability in the community. • Work with service user representatives to ensure needs are met in a pluralistic model.

  12. CDWs aim to… • Raise awareness and provide information about Mental Health issues & services to reduce stigma, via meetings, forum, events, etc. • Promote partnerships/collaboration between organisations to fill in gaps in service provision.

  13. CDWs aim to… • Act as consultants to up skill front line workers & organisations. • Influence commissioning; through mapping & evidence based reports raising awareness from a micro to a macro level. • Have a Mental Health resource provision for all residents of Hertfordshire.
