  3. Prepare for Testing

  4. Tools, Supports, Accommodations Universal Tools - All Students Access features of the assessments that are either provided as digitally delivered components of the test administration system or separate from it. Universal tools are available to all students based on student preference and selection. Designated Supports- Based on individual needs of the student Access features of the assessments available for use by any student for whom the need has been indicated by an educator (or team of educators working with the parent/guardian and student). They are either provided as digitally delivered components of the test administration system or separate from it. Accommodations – Students with IEPs or 504 plans Changes in procedures or materials that increase equitable access during the Smarter Balanced assessments. Accommodations are available for students with documented IEPs or 504 Plans. Consortium-approved accommodations do not compromise the learning expectations, construct, grade-level standard, or intended outcome of the assessments.

Checklist to Prep Before Testing • Room is ready; instructional support materials covered or removed • Tools clearly identified for the subject area and available for students (See page 15 in the Mead TAM) • Place Testing-Do Not Disturb sign on door • Identify location for placing backpacks, bags, and non-approved electronics • Have student login labels • Accommodations/Designated Supports identified

Monitoring Students During Testing • If a student asks for help on a question try: • I can’t help you with your test. • Always try your best. • Read the question again. • Think about what the question is asking you to do. • Use your on-line highlighter to mark key words in your test question. Actively monitor. Ensure students are: • Using allowed tools, manipulatives, and/or electronic devices. Use of a calculator on a non-calculator portion of a test will invalidate student test results • Not sharing their work • Reading and re-reading the Student Test Directions is permitted (NOT Test Questions) • Do not touch the computer of a student during testing. • It is permitted to remind all students to be sure to complete all items.

  7. Testing Irregularities – When in doubt see your principal Impropriety – A low risk of potentially affecting student performance on the test, test security, or test validity. Example:Student walks out during testing. Irregularity – An unusual circumstance that impacts an individual or group of students and may potentially affect student performance, test security, or test validity. Example: Student(s) provided a non-approved accommodation or calculator. Breach – Cheating, staff modification of student answers, or release of secure test content. Types of Appeals during Testing • Possible Reasons for needing an Appeal: • Re-Open Current Test Segment • Re-Open a Previous Test Segment and Grace Period • Reset • Restore • Invalidate • If in need of an Appeal for a student see your building administrator or school coordinator • Appeals are created in TIDE.

Online Test Sessions – Quick Tips • TA starts a session by logging into WCAP no more than 20 minutes prior to testing, selecting test(s), approving student access, and monitoring student progress. • When students are unable to log in, verify using “Student Lookup” that they are entering their log in information correctly. Legal first name, SSID and session ID. • The TA approves each student for the specific test and should deny access if the student has logged in to the wrong test.

General Rules of Online Testing • Headsets required for ELA CAT and any text to speech designated supports / accommodations. • Students must answer all Smarter Balanced items on a page before they can move on. • Students can mark a question for review later but must attempt an answer before moving on. • Once a test or section (CAT, PT) is completed, students cannot go back and review questions. • If a student can use a calculator, one will be provided in the tools menu. No other calculators are permitted; unless it is in the student’s IEP. • Student and Test Administrators are automatically logged out after 30 minutes of inactivity. If a TA session is timed-out, all student tests are automatically paused. • Prior to being logged out, a warning message will appear.

  15. Pause/Break Rules • If the computer adaptive test (CAT) portion of the test is paused for less than twenty minutes, the student can return to previous test pages and change the response to any item he or she has already answered within a segment. • If the CAT portion of the test is paused for more than twenty minutes, the test will return the student to the last page with unanswered items when the student resumes testing. If a page has both answered and unanswered items, the student may change any answers on that page. ***The student may not return to previous pages and cannot change answers to items on previous pages. • There are no pause rules in effect for the Performance Tasks (PT). Other Break Reminders: • Instruct students not to discuss the test • Monitor all students • Ensure students do not have access to electronics or backpacks OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION

Student Interface • Students use the WA Secure Browser • Students log into the Session using their legal first name, as listed in the student information system, SSID number and session ID. • If students are unable to log in, verify that they are entering their login information correctly. • If a student arrives late: • the student can join the session in progress with TA approval the TA can add another content area or grade level test to the session already in progress, if necessary • Students will only see their grade level exams.

Ending a Session • Remind students the session is about to end: • When there are approximately ten minutes left in the test session, the TA should give students a brief warning. • SAY:We are nearing the end of this test session. Please review any completed or marked for review items now. Do not submit your test unless you have answered all of the questions. • After all students have indicated they are finished, the TA will: • Stop this session by selecting “Stop Session” on the top left. • Students who need more time will need to log back into another testing session.   18. End of Segment – Notification to Students • Students receive a clear message that they are leaving a test segment and cannot go back to these questions at another time.

  19. Online Reporting System (ORS) Two Uses: 1. Test Management Center – Used by your school admin • Participation Reports in Plan and Manage Testing (have/have not completed) • Test completion rates (by school, grade, subject and opportunity) 2. Score Reports • Interim Assessments • Summative • MSP/EOC/HSPE

Participation • Assessment Participation - ELL • All students, including students with disabilities, English learners (ELs), and ELs with disabilities, should have equal opportunity to participate in the Smarter Balanced assessment, HSPE, EOC and MSP-Science assessment. • All students in grades 3-8 & 11 are required to participate in Smarter Balanced ELA and math assessments. Exceptions include: • English Language learners who enrolled in a U.S. School within the last 12 months prior to beginning testing have a one-time exemption from the ELA assessments but must participate in the math and science assessments. This must be coded in Test Incident Codes. • Juniors who passed the ELA SBA their sophomore year with a level 3 or 4 do not have to take the ELA SBA again • All students in grades 5 & 8 are required to participate in the MSP Science Testing Students Receiving Services (IEP or 504 plan) All students are to be held to the same expectations for participation and performance on state assessments.   23. MSP Science Assessments MSP Science • Participation is required in grades 5 and 8 for federal and state accountability. • MSP science assessments are also available in large print and braille. • MSP is to be completed in the day in which it was begun.

  24. Protocols, Security, and Responsibilities Before, During, & after testing

Security, Policies, & Responsibilities RCW 28A.635.040, RCW 42.56.250, WAC 181-87-060 • State Laws Governing Test Security All secure test materials are confidential. • No part of test material may be reproduced or transmitted. • Who is authorized to be in the room • Trained Test Administrators (contracted personnel only- no volunteers) • Other adults including teachers who are not administering the tests should not be in the testing location • No media • Students participating in state testing • Professional Code of Conduct • The Professional Code of Conduct is codified by the Washington State Legislature in WACs and RCWs. Teacher Responsibilities • Familiarize students test-taking strategies • Familiarize students with question formats • Multiple-Choice • Short-Answer • Completion • Essay • Stand-Alone • Encourage students to try questions and tasks even if they are uncertain • Help students to relax and be confident • Avoid excessive testing and coaching Use test results appropriately, including maintaining confidentiality of individual student results. TA Responsibilities (Before Testing) OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION • Complete Test Administration training • Review all state testing policies and administration documents prior to administering state tests (See Mead TAM) • Complete and sign a Test Assurance Security form (part 1) • Become familiar with the TA script (before/after) and directions to student (SAY boxes) • Confirm access to TIDE for you and your students • Have a list of tools, supports, accommodations and manipulatives needed for the assessment (ie. Scratch paper) • Familiarize yourself with the school’s Test Security and Building Plan • Provide a positive environment and prepare your room
