  2. 1. INTERNATIONAL TRADE ISSUES: - Britain closed many ports - Britain placed high tariffs on imports and exports 2. TRADE PROBLEMS WITH STATES: - Difficult trading crossing state lines 3. WAR DEBTS: - Struggled to collect taxes - Some states couldn’t afford to pay back debts

  3. 4. PRINTING MONEY: - States began printing large amounts of paper money - This resulted in INFLATION! 5. INFLATION: - WHEN COSTS OF GOODS GO UP AND THE VALUE OF THE DOLLAR GOES DOWN 6. DEPRESSION: - LOSS OF TRADE WITH BRITIAN COMBINED WITH INFLATION CREATED A LOW ECONOMIC DEPRESSION AND UNEMPLOYMENT

  4. 7. REBELLION: - Government was SO WEAK! - SHAYS’ REBELLION - CONGRESS COULD DO LITTLE TO PUT THIS REBELLION DOWN! - THIS PROVED THAT OUR GOVERNMENT WAS WEAK UNDER THE ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION

  5. WEAKNESS OF THE ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION • 1. MOST POWER HELD BY STATES • 2. ONE BRANCH (UNICAMERAL) • 3. LEGISLATIVE BRANCH HAS FEW POWERS • 4. NO EXECUTIVE BRANCH • 5. NO JUDICIAL BRANCH • 6. NO SYSTEM OF CHECKS AND BALANCES

  6. UNDER THE CONSTITUTION WE HAVE A REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY • A FORM OF GOVERNMENT FOUNDED ON THE PRINCIPLES OF POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY BY THE PEOPLES REPRESENTAITVES

  7. POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY • It is government based on the consent of the people. Government, established by free choice of the people, is expected to serve the people, who have sovereignty, or supreme power

  8. WE HAVE A BICAMERAL GOVERNMENT 2 HOUSES: HOUSE OF REPRESENTAIVES AND THE SENATE

  9. WE HAVE 3 BRANCHES IN OUR GOVERNMENT SEPERATION OF POWERS
