  6. Kandinski was one of the first modern artists who painted abstract shapes to express feelings, rather than creating pictures of objects and people. Kandinski loved music, especially classical music. Often when he painted, he would listen to music and try to paint what the music made him feel.

Van Gogh used lines and colors by the feelings he felt inside, and not necessarily how they would appear in a photograph. • For example, in Starry Night his brushstrokes are heavy and create a rhythmic pattern around the stars. This movement was not literally happening, but was the emotion the stars inspired in him.
