  1. CELL TRANSPORT What is it?

  2. Definition: • Cell Transport is moving materials into, out of, or within the cell • Cell Transport within the cell (intracellular) is accomplished by- • The endoplasmic reticulum and • Cytoplasmic streaming

  3. Cell transport between cells • Is accomplished through the cell (plasma) membrane

  4. What is the purpose of cell transport? • Cells need to bring in materials necessary for homeostasis • Cells need to get rid of wastes • Cells produce materials that will be used in other parts of the cell, or outside the cell in other parts of the organism

  5. Let’s review the structure- 3 http://personal.tmlp.com/JImr57/textbook/chapter3/cms.htm

  6. The jobs of the plasma membrane are: • To decide what goes into and out of the cell, • Communication between cells • Carrying markers to identify the cell

  7. Water • Passes freely through the cell membrane • This process is called osmosis • The water content is determined by the concentration of water inside and outside the cell • Water will move from where there is more of it to where there is less of it http://web.educastur.princast.es/proyectos/biogeo_ov/2BCH/B2_CELULA/t22_MEMBRANA/gifs/osmosis.gif

  8. Passive Transport • Also called diffusion - is accomplished through the membrane proteins • The cell does not have to use any of its own energy for this to happen http://personal.tmlp.com/JImr57/textbook/chapter3/cmf1.htm 4

  9. Active transport • Also uses membrane proteins, but the cell is required to use energy for this to happen • Works against the concentration gradient http://personal.tmlp.com/JImr57/textbook/chapter3/cmf1c.htm

  10. Active Transport • Special types are endocytosis-when the cell engulfs molecules within a vacuole • and exocytosis-when the cell expels molecules from a vacuole 2 http://personal.tmlp.com/JImr57/textbook/chapter3/cmf4a.htm

  11. The other proteins in the membrane • Are receptor molecules for communication between cells • And marker proteins that identify the cell http://personal.tmlp.com/JImr57/textbook/chapter3/cmf2.htm 2
