Developing an Energy Management Dashboard at Acadia University

This project, spearheaded by Jodie Noiles, Sustainability Coordinator, aims to create an energy management dashboard for Acadia University. The dashboard will display real-time data on energy consumption, including electricity and fuel use, greenhouse gas emissions, and more. By building on previous work completed in Green IT, the project will conduct a systems analysis and design a functional mock-up to enhance awareness, education, and engagement in energy management. The project will be implemented in phases, with the first phase focusing on essential features such as energy data tracking and displaying college-wide energy efforts.

  1. Acadia Dashboard Development Project Jodie Noiles, Sustainability Coordinator Feb. 7, 2012

  2. Overview • Purpose • What are dashboards? • Why install a dashboard? • Project overview • Acadia energy management system • Questions?

  3. Project Purpose • Purpose: (1) Building on work completed in Green IT, conduct a systems analysis for the creation of an energy management dashboard for Acadia and (2) Design a functional mock-up • Approach: Development in Phases • Timeline: • Winter 2011 – Green IT RA/mock-up • Winter 2012 - SAD • Summer 2012 – First phase implementation (kWh & residences, other features/content)

  4. What are Dashboards? • Software programs that track and display the exact amount of energy being consumed in a building at any given time

  5. Why install a dashboard? • Next step in energy management at Acadia • Education and engagement (e.g. awareness, competitions http://aiae.acadiau.ca/campus-climate-challenge.html) • Real-time data helps monitor and manage energy use • Helps occupants modify behaviors (e.g. car dashboard)

  6. Project Overview • Requirements for data management/display • Scope: • electricity use (kWh) • fuel consumption (L) • GHG greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e) • Water (L) • Integration with Acadia CMS website? • Primary features and functions (e.g. energy data, description, competition, green features, tips) • Design mock-up • Future: secondary features (e.g. app, widgets, social media)

  7. Energy System @ Acadia • Electricity and fuel use @ Acadia • Johnson Controls Energy Contract & retrofits etc. • Metasys data
