  2. Suppositories: Suppositories are semi solid dosage form of medicament for insertion into body cavities other than mouth. Advantages: These can be easily administered to children, old persons and to unconscious patients who cannot swallow the drug easily. Local action It promotes evacuation of bowel These are convenient mode of administration of drugs which irritate GIT, cause vomiting and destroyed in the acidic pH Sustained action

  3. Disadvantages: The irrigate drugs cant be administrated by this route Causes embarrassment to the patients Cant be prepared easily Types of suppositories: Rectal suppositories Vaginal suppositories Nasal suppositories Urethral suppositories 5. Ear cones

Suppository bases: An ideal suppository base should have the following properties: It should melt at body temperature It should keep its shape when being handled Should release medicament readily Should be non-toxic Should be stable on storage Should be compatible with large number of drugs Should be easily moulded Should be good in appearance

  5. Classification of suppository bases: Fatty bases Water soluble and water miscible bases Emulsifying bases Fatty bases: Examples: Theobroma oil, Hydrogenated oil Water soluble and water miscible bases: Examples: Glycero gelatin base, PEG Emulsifying bases: Examples: Witepsol, massuppol

  6. Preparation of suppositories: Rolling method Fusion method Cold compression method Rolling method: Its an ancient method of preparing suppositories. The suppository base rolled and then desired shape is given with the hand. Fusion method: The suppository base is melted, the medicament is incorporated in it and filled in lubricated mould. On cooling suppositories are formed which are removed from suppository mould.
