  1. Accuracy and Precision Sig Fig Quiz

  2. Objectives • Today I will be able to: • Differentiate between accuracy and precision • Apply making accurate and precise measurements to a lab • Informal assessment – monitoring student questions, group interactions during the lab and responses to the discussion after the lab • Formal assessment – analyzing responses to the lab calculations and results section and the exit ticket • Common Core Connection • Build Strong Content Knowledge • Attend to precision • Model with mathematics • Use appropriate tools strategically • Reason abstractly and quantitatively

  3. Lesson Sequence • Evaluate: Warm-Up • Evaluate: Sig Fig Quiz • Engage/Explore: Accuracy and Precision Lab 1 • Elaborate: Accuracy and Precision Notes • Engage/Explore: Accuracy and Precision Lab 2 • Elaborate: Lab Discussion • Evaluate: Exit Ticket

  4. Warm-Up • What are some techniques I can use to make precise measurements in lab? • Why is it important to make accurate and precise measurements? • Take out your cell-phone and grab a sticky note (Quiz Time) • Put your name on the sticky

  5. Objective • Today I will be able to: • Differentiate between accuracy and precision • Apply making accurate and precise measurements to a lab

  6. Homework • Write the conclusion for the Accuracy and Precision Lab

  7. Lesson Sequence • Warm-Up • Sig Fig Quiz • Accuracy and Precision Lab 1 • Accuracy and Precision Notes • Accuracy and Precision Lab 2 • Lab Discussion • Exit Ticket

  8. Sig Fig Quiz Put everything away except for a pencil or pen and a calculator

  9. Part 2 – Sig Fig Quiz • Copy the problem onto the front or back of your quiz. Solve and record your answer to the correct number of sig figs. • 12.3 + 14.06 + 4.0001 = _____________ • 16.33 + 12.465 + 0.022 = ____________ • 34.5 x 0.0001 = _____________ • 150.00 x 65.4 = ______________

  10. Take 2-3 minutes to read the lab procedure. Put a box around measurements you will record into the data table. Accuracy and Precision Lab

  11. Lab Safety/ Clean Up • No closed toe shoes or aprons are required

  12. Accuracy and Precision Lab Trial 1 • Collect data for trial 1 and complete the trial 1 calculations at your desk. Do not complete trial two calculations yet. Record your percent error on the board.

  13. Trial 1 Discussion • At your table discuss the following questions and be prepared to share out: • What was your percent error? • Were your measurements accurate? • Were your measurements precise? • How did the accuracy and precision of your measurement affect the volume you calculated?

  14. How do you define accuracy? Precision?

  15. Accuracy • Measurement is close to the accepted value

  16. Precision • Having more significant figures in a measurement

  17. Sports ExamplesWhich requires P or A? http://blog.affinitymed.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/6-7-09-kobe-shooting-in-the-paint-small.jpg http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/multimedia/photo_gallery/0808/oly.phelps.sequence/images/opgm-37117-mid.jpg

  18. Lets Think… • Identify the 3 different targets using the terms accurate or precise

  19. Accuracy and Precision Lab Trial 2 • Collect data for trial 2 and complete the trial 2 calculations at your desk. Record your percent error on the board.

  20. Trial 2 Discussion • At your table discuss the following questions and be prepared to share out: • What was your percent error? • Were your measurements accurate? • Were your measurements precise? • How did the accuracy and precision of your measurement affect the volume you calculated?

  21. Conclusion Using the data and the information used in the discussion write your conclusion for the lab. If you do not finish writing the conclusion in class, it will become your homework.

  22. Exit Ticket • At what times in your daily life must you make precise, and or accurate, measurements? • Can you think of any careers where accurate measurements would be important? • List several answers on the index card
