Are You at Risk for Vitamin B12 Deficiency?

Many people are at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency and they do not even realize it.

Women in their menstrual years, vegetarians, vegans, alcoholics, anemic and those with immunosuppressive disorders tend to be deficient in vitamin B-12.

Deficiency may also be caused by poor absorption of B-12 in the digestive track.

Are You at Risk for Vitamin B12 Deficiency?

This is particularly a problem for the elderly and people with eating disorders.

Although easily tested for via blood, vitamin B-12 deficiency often goes undiagnosed until a person begins to exhibit signs of more extreme symptoms.

Are You at Risk for Vitamin B12 Deficiency?

The body is not able to store large amounts of vitamin B12 because it is water-soluble like all B vitamins.

The body must therefore be supplied with a consistent and high quality source of B-12 through the foods eaten or through supplementation.

Supplementation is almost always needed because most of us have poor diets and thus, are not getting enough B vitamins, particularly B-12.

Vitamin B12 deficiency causes symptoms like tingling, tremors, nerve pain, dementia, brain fog, mental illness, and difficulty walking.

It can also cause developmental disabilities or autistic-like symptoms in children.

Vitamin B12 deficiency may be misdiagnosed as Alzheimer’s, diabetic neuropathy, depression, vertigo and mini-strokes.

Hundreds of clinical studies report that vitamin B12 deficiency occurs in up to 15% of the elderly—approximately 5.4 million American seniors. Other studies show the prevalence to be 15% to 25% of seniors.
