  1. Date: 11/16/10Prepared by: Javier Kienzle, Fellow - GK12  ProgramPresented at: McNair Academic High SchoolSupported by:  NSF Graduate Teaching Fellow in K-12 Education ProgramAssociated Institution: Stevens Institute of Technology - Hoboken, NJ WHAT IS ENGINEERING?

  2. Say what? “Scientists investigate that which already is;Engineers create that which has never been.” -Albert Einstein

  3. What is Engineering? • Solve society’s problems • Using knowledge of the physical world • Math • Chemistry • Physics • Create, develop, and apply Technologyto our lives • Technology serves as an extension of human capability

  4. Solving Problems • An engineer simplifies problems • Complex problems are broken down into smaller manageable problems • Create a model.

  5. Models - Mathematics y = m x + b

  6. Models - Physics F = ma

  7. Models - Chemistry Chemical Reaction reactants products Zn(s) + 2 HCl (aq)  ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g)

  8. My Research • Mechanical Engineer • Focus: Thermal Design • Heat Transfer • Energy • Power Generation • Research: Solar Power • Photovoltaic Panels produce electricity • Other designs capture thermal energy • Hybrids do both

  9. Solar: Energy in Buildings • Solar hybrids tend to have custom designs • Goal is to produce a model that can be scaled across general building structures. Source: SolarWall.com
