  2. Previously • Previously, in the book The Island of the Blue Dolphins, which is prequel to this book, there is a girl named Karana, who has a sister, Ulape, and a brother. When people from the missions come and persuade the tribe people to come live at the mission, the tribe people decide to go there, and then leave their home. But Karana was left behind. She did not have a chance to go on the boat to the missions. Karana kept on telling her brother that people would come for them, but nobody came, and her brother died. Her sister Ulape had left to the mission. What will Karana do?

  12. Summary • Zia lived in the Santa Barbara mission as a plain girl with a brother named Mando. She had an aunt named Karana, and Zia wanted to meet her ever since. Zia’s life became extraordinary when she and her brother found a boat, and went to find their aunt. They met some bad people… Finally, they escaped, and just went back to the mission, because they were too tired. Next, adults (Father Vincente, etc.) went to find Karana. When they return, Zia and Mando saw their aunt Karana with the adults. They have a good time with their aunt at the mission!
