  2. BIOGRAPHICALINFORMATION • Lewis latimer was born September 4,1848- born in Chelsea , Massachusetts. • Latimer was the youngest of four children born to George and Rebecca Latimer • He married Mary Wilson Lewis on November 15, 1873 • He died on December 11, 1928 in New York

  3. EDUCATION • He went to a farm school and Phillip's grammar school • He never went to high school or college • In short, he just had the education from life.

  4. CAREER • learned a art of mechanical drawing while working at a patent firm • At the age of 16,he lied about his age in order to enlist in the United States navy during the civil war. • He taught himself mechanical He awing and drafting by observing the work of draftsmen at his jobs • He worked as a patent consultant until 1922 .

  5. INVENTIONS • Latimer designed his own inventions: • An improved railroad car bathroom • An early air conditioning unit • He was also directly involved with other inventions • Working with Alexander Graham Bell, he designed the telephone • Working for Hiram Maxim and Thomas Edison, he worked on incandescent lighting

  6. Main Invention • Latimer was an indispensable partner to Edison as he promoted and defended his light bulb designed • Lewis latimer invented a carbon filament for the light bulb. • In 1980, Latimer published a book entitled Incandescent Electric Lighting: A Practical Description of the Edison System
