  2. EDeAN Objectives • The “European Design for All e-Accessibility Network” (http://www.edean.org) • Established in 2002 by the European Commission and the member states in order to : • Raise the profile of Design For All (DfA) and emphasize its importance in achieving greater accessibility in the Information Society for as many people as possible ; • Provide a European forum for DfA issues ; • Raise awareness for DfA in the public and private sectors ; • Provide input for European curricula on DfA (in accordance with the eEurope 2002 Action Plan)

  3. DfA in the Information Society • Broad and multidisciplinary connotation, abstracting over different perspectives ; design (Bühler & Stepahnidis, 2004) • of interactive products, services and applications • of products, which have standardized interfaces • of products which are easily adaptable to different users. • In the Information Society, the adoption and practice of DfA, although advocated by many actors in the field, still presents significant challenges, due to the inherent characteristics of the sector, and in particular to established industry practice and curriculum for DfA.

  4. Current Challenges of DfA • Introducing specific legislative measures to complement and enhance existing legislation (eEurope 2002 and 2005 action plan, http://europa.eu.int/information_society/eeurope/2002/action_plan/index_en.htm) • Addressing and motivating the industry • Effective benchmarking • Providing harmonised standardisation • Creating a European curriculum for DfA • Addressing future research activities • Increasing activities towards promoting awareness, dissemination and mainstreaming of DfA

  5. Network status expansion • EDeANis composed of National Networks, one in each European member state ; • Kernel (2002-2004) :Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, UK • 7 NCCs have been appointed since January 2005 in the following countries : • Czech Republic ; Estonia ; Hungary ; Lithuania ; Malta ; Slovakia ; Slovenia • Currently, 157 European organizations are represented in EDeAN network ;

  6. EDeAN ROADMAP

  7. EDeAN Working Principles • While the NCCs are the primary contact for the network within their respective countries at a national level, the Secretariat coordinates the European Network contacts at the European level. • Secretariat management rotates yearly : • 2005 : EDeAN Secretariat was run by ICS-FORTH (Greece) ; • 2006 : “ “ is run by STAKES, R&D Centre for Health and Welfare (Finlande) ; • 2007 : “” will run by CNR-IFAC (Italy).

  8. EDeAN SIGs • The Special Interest Groups (SIGs) of EDeAN are formed and operate in order to significantly contribute to advance DfA knowledge on a range of topics, including: • Benchmarking (cb@ftb-volmarstein.de) • Policy and Legislation (jan.ekberg@stakes.fi) • Standardisation (Jan.engelen@esat.kuleuven.ac.be) • Proactive assessment (p.l.emiliani@ifac.cnr.it) • DfA curricula (yngve@nada.kth.se) • The SIGs operate through HERMES, the EDeAN portal, available at: http://www.edean.org
