  2. 48/72 Workweek Overview • Firefighters are divided into 7 work groups. • Each group consists of a specific number of personnel and a balanced structure. Each block in the structure is critical and must be filled behind when vacated. The balance aids in leave, boot carrying, and overtime. The balancing of the department extends to each group, each station, and each job description. (they are all related) • Each group works 2 days on/3 days off, 2 days on/3 days off, 2 days on/2 days off for a total of 14 days (1 pay period). The exact number of hours are still worked…just in different intervals. • Each day, 3 groups work together; all firefighters work six shifts per pay period. Groups that follow in number, forward and backward, never work together. ( grp. 7 connects back to grp. 1)

  3. 48/72 Workweek Overview • Kelly days are eliminated; firefighters now have 2 three day breaks every 2 weeks. • Assistant Chiefs / Station Chiefs must work in consecutive groups. If they ride trucks, they must figure them into that station’s Crew Chief structure. A/C’s can go wherever within the 7 groups, but they must be consecutive. (best coverage of officers and supervisors) • TECHNICAL ISSUES: The pay period groupings run exactly the same from the inception of the schedule. It must be implemented at the start of a new pay period. Simply put, a calendar will fit together like a puzzle if you connect each month to the top of the month that follows (Jan. to Feb. Feb. to Mar. and so on). This makes a grid of 7 columns across and continues in rows forever. Even into new calendar years. Plug the pre-arranged group listings in at the start of any pay period and it will continue infinitely, repeating itself at the start of each new pay period. Keep in mind, the DAYS a work group will work never change from year to year, the DATES a work group will work do change each year (You will not work every Christmas!!).

  4. 48/72 Workweek Overview • PROS: consecutive days off (eliminates day to day rut), more family time (helps single parents), aids in scheduling (classes, doctors appointments, kid’s stuff), less driving mileage to and from work (to and from 3 times in a pay period as opposed to 6 times), can take 2 days of leave and get 8 days off as opposed to 4, less “call ins” b/c you have consecutive days of plus it’s unlikely you’ll call in if you are already at work (2nd day). Less overtime, less boot carrying, more work efficiency, better moral, higher training completion percentage, second jobs, and so on …….. • CONS: working 48 straight hours (you get over it fast due to all the positives). Some will call off sick for 2 days (double down) rather than come in for 1 day.

  6. Summary • Our training percentages improved from less than 80% to almost 100% • Morale improved dramatically • Overtime reduced • Employee travel costs cut in half • More consecutive family time • The closest we will come to a municipal work schedule.
