1. The Deep South Resource Center for Minority Aging Research (RCMAR): New Opportunities for Collaboration and Career Development A collaborative program of the Morehouse School of Medicine, Tuskegee University, University of Alabama, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)
Funded by the National Institute on Aging and the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities
2. OVERALL PURPOSE Reduce health disparities between African American and White older adults
Serve as research-based and mentoring investment in the process of closing the health disparities gap
Increase the number of researchers with the capacity to conduct independent, peer-reviewed research
3. Deep South RCMAR Focus Health problems that are particularly prevalent among older African Americans and for which disparities have been established
Issues related to rural elders; intervention research; preventive health strategies; and socio-economic, discrimination, trust, and bioethical issues
4. UAB Study of Aging1999-2001 Subjects were a stratified, random sample of Medicare beneficiaries living in 5 counties in central Alabama.
The study over-sampled males, African Americans, and rural residents.
