  1. Infusion Time and Volume • If it is not specified in the order, you may have to calculate • duration – if fluid volume and flow rate are known; • fluid volume – if the duration and flow rate are known.

  2. Calculating Infusion Time Rule 15-8 To calculate infusion time in hours (T), identify the: V(volume) F (flow rate) Use the formula method or dimensional analysis to find T.

  3. Calculating Infusion Time Find the total time to infuse using the formula method. Ordered: 1000 mL NS, infuse at 75 mL/h T = 13.33 Total time to infuse the solution = 13 hours and 20 minutes Example

  4. Calculating Infusion Time (cont.) Find the total time to infuse using dimensional analysis. Ordered: 1000 mL NS to infuse at a rate of 75 mL/hr T h = 1000 mL/1 x 1 hr/75 mL T h = 1000 hr/75 T h = 13.33 h T = 13 hours 20 minutes Example

  5. Rule 15-9 To calculate the time when an infusion will be completed, you must know: the time the infusion started; the total time to infuse the solution ordered. Calculating Infusion Time (cont.)

  6. Calculating Infusion Time (cont.) When will the infusion will be completed? Ordered: 1000 mL NS, infuse at 75 mL/hr Started at 11 p.m. 08/04/12 Infusion time = 13 h 20 min 11 p.m. = 2300 hrs 2300 + 1320 = 3620 – 2400 = 1220 Complete: 1220 or 12:20 p.m. on 08/05/12 Example

  7. Calculating Volume (cont.) Rule 15-10 To calculate infusion Volume: Use the formula V = T x F or dimensional analysis to find V the infusion volume in mL. T (time) F (flow rate)

  8. Calculating Volume (cont.) Find the total volume infused in 5 hours if the infusion rate is 35 mL/h. V = 5 h × 35 mL/h V = 175 mL 175 mL will infuse in 5 hours Example

  9. Calculating Volume (cont.) Find the total volume infused in 5 hours if the infusion rate is 35 mL/h. Using dimensional analysis V mL = 5 h / 1 x 35 mL / 1 h V mL = 175 mL Example

  10. Practice Find total infusion time. Ordered: 650 mL 0.45 NS at 40 mL/h started at 0315 8/9/12 When will this IV be completed? ANSWER: T = 16.25 hours Total infusion time = 16 hr 15 min ANSWER: 7:30 p.m. 8/9/12

  11. Find the volume to administer. Ordered: D5NS at 65 mL/hr for 8 hours Practice ANSWER: V = 520 mL
