Programs of HUD • Housing • Single Family Housing • Multifamily Housing • Community Planning and Development • Provides funding to states and local governments through the Community Development Block Grant program (CDBG) and HOME program • Rural Innovation Fund supports rural housing and economic development activities • Public and Indian Housing • Funds housing authorities to provide public housing and Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8 vouchers) • Funds Indian Housing entities under the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act (NAHASDA) • Provides loan guarantees for single family homes owned by Native Americans under HUD’s 184 Loan Program • Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity • Enforces the Fair Housing Act by • Provides funding competitively under the Fair Housing Initiative Program to nonprofits

  3. Community Development Block Grant Program • The CDBG program is a flexible program that provides communities with resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs. The CDBG program provides annual grants on a formula basis to general units of local government and States.

Communities receiving CDBG funds from the State may use the funds for many kinds of community development activities including, but not limited to: • Acquisition of property for public purposes; • Construction or reconstruction of streets, water and sewer facilities; • Neighborhood center, recreation facilities, and other public works; • Demolition; • Rehabilitation of public and private buildings; • Public services; • Planning activities; • Assistance to nonprofit entities for community development activities; and • Assistance to private, for profit entities to carry out economic development activities

  6. Sustainable Communities Partnership • HUD, DOT, EPA have formed the Partnership for Sustainable Communities and are committed to working together in support of 6 Livability Principles: 1. Provide more transportation choices 2. Promote equitable, affordable housing 3. Enhance economic competitiveness 4. Support existing communities 5. Coordinate policies and leverage investment 6. Value communities and neighborhoods

Sustainable Communities Planning Grant Program Background • In FY2010 budget, Congress appropriated $150 million to HUD for a Sustainability Initiative • $100 million was available for the Planning Grant Program • $25 million targeted to regions with a population less than 500,000 • One component of an integrated federal strategy Goal • support multi-jurisdictional regional planning efforts that integrate housing, economic development, and transportation decision-making • empower jurisdictions to consider the interdependent challenges of economic growth, social equity, and environmental impact simultaneously
