Problem statement • Pregnant women and women going into labor in developing countries lack the necessary equipment and medical aid to ensure a safe delivery • Deliveries are usually at home, due to long distances from hospitals, and usually employ improper, unsafe, and unsanitary techniques • The use of these techniques likely result from poor living conditions and lack of formal education of medical care • Goal: to develop a sustainable solution in order to increase the safety of pregnancy focusing specifically on safety of home births • target demographic: project affects pregnant mother, family, and perinatal baby • region of interest: Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern (highest maternal mortality rates) • top three countries: Kenya (360), Ethiopia (350), Uganda (310) • (for comparison: US is 21/100,000 live births)
