  1. What is NEES? NEES, the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation, is a national, networked, simulation resource that includes geographically-distributed, shared-use, next-generation experimental research Equipment Sites built and operated to advance earthquake engineering research and education through collaborative and integrated experimentation, theory, data archiving, and model-based simulation. The goal of NEES is to accelerate progress in earthquake engineering research and to improve the seismic design and performance of civil and mechanical infrastructure systems through the integration of people, ideas, and tools in a collaboratory environment. Open access to and use of NEES research facilities and data by all elements of the earthquake engineering community, including researchers, educators, students, practitioners, and information technology experts, is a key element of this goal – Article III, Section 2, Bylaws of NEES Consortium, Inc. What is NEES@UIUC (MUST-SIM)? As one of 15 experiment sites, Multi-Axial Full-Scale Sub-Structuring Testing & Simulation Facility (MUST-SIM) locates in Newmark Structural Engineering Laboratory, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. MUST-SIM develops a new vision for integrated physical and analytical simulation for seismic assessment of complete systems. The Load and Boundary Condition Boxes (LBCBs) allow precise control of the action/deformation at the interface between the numerical and the physical simulations, resulting in high fidelity representation of the system under investigation. Advanced, non-contact instrumentation yields a greater density of information than previously available. High-end display hardware, combined with data fusion software, is used for output visualization thus enabling enhanced understanding of seismic response. The MUST-SIM facility aims to integrate the efforts of geotechnical and structural engineers, as well as experimentalists and analysts.
