  2. Article • Supporting Adaptivity in Intelligent User Interfaces: The case of Media and Modalities Allocation by Charalampos Karagiannidis, Adamantios Koumpis, and Constantine Stephanidis

  3. Interpretation of Article • Adaptivity is an important part of IUIs to help improve systems • IUIs are defined according to the author as a UI that adapts itself and has dynamic communications

  4. Interpretation 2 • Adaptivity constituents - the aspects of the interaction that are adapted, e.g. information content • Adaptivity determinants - the factors guide the adaptivity process, e.g. adaptivity based on user characteristics, task or application nature; • Adaptivity goals - the particular objectives that are to be served by the adaptivity process, e.g. minimize number of errors, optimize efficiency or effectiveness; • Adaptivity rules - ‘drive’ the instantiation of the adaptivity constituents, based on the state of the adaptivity determinants

  5. Interpretation 3 • Adaptivity Determinants: • User’s characteristics, tasks being performed, information characteristics, state of discourse • Adaptivity Constituents: • Generic functions, interaction level • Adaptivity Goals: • Easy efficient, speed up use, simplify use

  6. Interpretation 4 • Proposed Methodology • Step: specify adaptivity design space • Step: specify the set of partials of media and modalities • Step: Introduce constraints on composition of media and modalities • Step: Suggestions are combined in the design space

  7. Article and Relationship to Class • GUEPs are exemplified in this article • KISS: • Keeping the IUI as simple as possible for the user • Mental model: • What the user assumes a IUI should have should be incorporated into an IUI

  8. Examples from my own Experiences • Adaptivity is something that I have noticed in IUIs that is very important • Anything that is able to adapt as I use it only improves it’s functionality • Take Microsoft Excel for example – it starts to adapt to things I type in which makes my job easier

  9. Criticism of Conclusions • Says adaptivity is central to IUI • I believe that adaptivity is important to the changing IUI however I am not sure it is the main theme • I think the main theme is a combination of adaptivity and giving the user what they want • Issues related to timing in communication need to be identified • Says that should be directly or through shared space • This is not necessarily the biggest thing to consider with adaptivity • I think the biggest issue with IUIs and adaptivity is the user
