Literature circles provide students with an opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions about complex issues in novels within a supportive, smaller group setting. In today’s session, we will focus on three key topics: the meaning of Lorraine's statement regarding social outcasts, the identification of other outcast characters in the story, and predictions on how the various conflicts introduced in the narrative may unfold. Additionally, we will draw parallels between the challenges faced by the novel’s characters and contemporary issues that students encounter today, encouraging deeper reflection and connection.

Literature Circles Literature groups or circles give students a chance to discuss issues related to the novel in a smaller, less intimidating environment. We are going to break into small groups to discuss 3 issues today. • In chapter 4, Lorraine says that Norton is a social outcast. What does she mean by this? Decide which of the other characters in the novel might be called outcasts and why. • From our discussion about the conflicts presented in the novel, predict how each conflict might turn out. • Do students today face the same kinds of problems that John and Lorraine face. How are these problems different?
