Margin Question 10: page 849Did Latin America follow or diverge from the historical path of Europe during the 19th century? JustynaMalek and Bridget Collins Section:8
Yes? Elements that resembled Europe • Population Growth—due to reformed public health measures: safe drinking water, sewers, and inoculations • Urbanization • Middle class grew • Organization of mutual aid societies, and eventually unions
Elements that strayed from Europe • Although the middle class grew, it represented a marginal group of the entire population. • Most of the population was lower-class and rural rather than urban • Many of these people worked on peons or haciendas—unlike Europe where land was broken up
Europe LatinAmerica
Elements that strayed from Europe Cont. • No widespread overthrow of government—only Mexico had a nationwide revolution • No Industrial Revolution of their own • Huge percent of population impoverished—did not allow for a large market • The wealthy benefited from the export system, so they didn’t invest in manufacturing • Many governments depended on taxing the European manufactured goods to fill their treasuries
Developed from capital from abroad—resulting in a “dependent development” • Investors pressured the governments to maintain conditions favorable to their businesses
