SASKATOON HOME BUYER’S GUIDE TO OPEN HOUSE ETIQUETTE • A favourite weekend pastime for many consists of attending their local Saskatoon Open Houses whether they’re in the market for their dream home, interested in interior design or merely a curious neighbour.
DON’T MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME “Open House” does not mean all access. Until closing, you are a guest in someone else’s home. While, yes, you are there to tour someone else’s home, refrain from using the bathrooms without express permission or take a test drive of the furniture. Especially avoid opening and rummaging through drawers, cabinets, closets and any other closed doors.
Ask Before The Photo Opp Along the same line, always ask if you are permitted to take photos and videos. If there is still a family living in the home it can pose a breach of privacy so it is best to ask the agent. • Wait Your Turn There are plenty of rooms waiting for you to explore! No need to stuff yourselves into a single room like sardines. Have a little patience and don’t linger and overstay your turn viewing a room.
Keep Your Critiques To Yourself Once again, you are a guest viewing someone else’s home. Though a particular paint colour might make you want to puke, it is best to leave those thoughts until you have left to discuss. After all, you never know who might be listening and your comments may come back to haunt you if you plan on making an offer.
Dress Appropriately Definitely not an occasion for a formal floor length gown and suit and tie, but avoid being too casual and risk not being taken as a serious buyer. Keep it reasonable, presentable and comfortable.
Ask Question This is your opportunity to get as much information about the home as possible. How long the home has been on the market, the condition of the home and any renovations or upgrades that have been done on the home are all excellent places to start. And last but not least, using your manners are the golden rule! Have a burning question about Open Houses, buying or selling that is not included in this list?
