  2. Important people • The most famous Algerian was St. Augustine (354–430), a Church father who was born in eastern Numidia. An important 19th-century figure was Abd-el-Kader (1808–1873), emir of Mascara, who led the resistance against the French invaders from 1830 to 1847.

  3. Important places • Algiers—capitol city of Algeria • Batna—popular tourist site because its so close to Andes mountains • Tiaret—has historical monuments • Sétif—capitol of Sétif Province • Chlef—capitol of Chlef Province of Algeria • Tipasa—known for sand beaches
